  1. Structural basis of translation termination, rescue, and recycling in mammalian mitochondria

Kummer, Eva; Noel Schubert, Katharina; Schoenhut, Tanja; et al. (2021)
    Molecular Cell
The mitochondrial translation system originates from a bacterial ancestor but has substantially diverged in the course of evolution. Here, we use single-particle cryo-electron microscopy (cryo-EM) as a screening tool to identify mitochondrial translation termination mechanisms and to describe them in molecular detail. We show how mitochondrial release factor 1a releases the nascent chain from the ribosome when it encounters the canonical ...

  2. The evolution of roles

    Müller, Julian; Brandes, Ulrik (2022)
    Social Networks
We propose a novel formalization of roles in social networks that unifies the most commonly used definitions of role equivalence. As one consequence, we obtain a single, straightforward proof that role equivalences form lattices. Our formalization focuses on the evolution of roles from arbitrary initial conditions and thereby generalizes notions of relative and iterated roles that have been suggested previously. In addition to the unified ...

  3. Stability and fate of environmental DNA

    Kleyer, Hannah; Deiner, Kristy (2021)
STABILITY AND FATE OF ENVIRONMENTAL DNA Hannah Kleyer and Kristy Deiner Environmental DNA Group, Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) Zürich, Switzerland Environmental DNA (eDNA) has become a crucial tool to detect organism distribution and monitor biodiversity in various environments. eDNA is shed into the environment by animals and plants as complex mixture of different states ranging from intact cells and organelles, to ...
  4. Transition prediction and sensitivity analysis for a natural laminar flow wing glove flight experiment

Yang, Tihao; Zhong, Hai; Chen, Yifu; et al. (2021)
    Chinese Journal of Aeronautics
Natural laminar flow technology can significantly reduce aircraft aerodynamic drag and has excellent technical appeal for transport aircraft development with high aerodynamic efficiency. Accurately and efficiently predicting the laminar-to-turbulent transition and revealing the maintenance mechanism of laminar flow in a transport aircraft's flight environment are significant for developing natural laminar flow wings. In this research, we ...

  5. Just beautiful?! What determines butterfly species for nature conservation

Habel, Jan C.; Gossner, Martin M.; Schmitt, Thomas (2021)
    Biodiversity and Conservation
Prioritization is crucial in nature conservation, as land and financial resources are limited. Selection procedures must follow objective criteria, and not primarily subjective aspects, such as charisma. In this study, we assessed the level of charisma for all European butterflies. Based on these data, we analysed the charisma values of the species listed on the annexes of the EU Habitats Directive and of the species being of conservation ...
