Thin Solid FilmsVogel, Viola; Möbius, Dietmar (1985)The temperature dependence of the surface pressure and surface potential isotherms of the bipolar compound HOOC(CH2)16COOCH3 (C18-HE) was investigated. The bipolar molecule has three subunits (carboxyl group, ester group and hydrocarbon chain) characterized by different energies of interaction with the water surface. On compression, the monolayer passes through three phases until it is close-packed with the molecules in an upright conformation: (a) intially the molecules are lying flat on the water surface (phase 1); (b) the hydrophobic (CH2) segments of the chain are removed from the monolayer/water interface as indicated by the onset of a plateau region in the isotherms (phase 2); (c) the less polar ester groups are removed from the monolayer/water interface as indicated by a steep increase in surface potential (phase 3). During phase 1 all subunits are attached to the water surface. Each phase transition corresponds to the removal of one subunit from the water surface. The temperature dependence of the phase transitions leads to the definition of three critical temperatures, each of which is associated with one specific phase and molecular subunit. - An in situ X-ray diffraction study of phase separation in Cu-Ta alloy thin filmsItem type: Journal Article
