- For a thicker semiotic description of mathematical practice and structureItem type: Book Chapter
Texts in Philosophy ~ PhiMSAMP: Philosophy of Mathematics: Sociological Aspects and Mathematical PracticeWagner, Roy (2010)I use geometric linear algebra case studies to call for a "thick description" (in the sense of Clifford Geertz) of mathematical semiotic practice. This line of thinking leads me to intervene in contemporary mathematical structuralism (Hellman, Resnik, Shapiro) through continental linguistic structuralism. - Who speaks mathematics: a semiotic case studyItem type: Book Chapter
Texts in Philosophy ~ Philosophical Perspectives on Mathematical PracticeWagner, Roy (2010)This paper uses a case study (Gödel's proof of his incompleteness theorem) to perform a semiotic analysis of the enunciative position in a mathematical text. My attempt is to demonstrate the complexity of this enunciative position in order to link the research of mathematical textual practices to perspectives of critical theory.
