- The capability profiles of global production networks: an empirical typology to identify opportunities for network reconfiguration and calibrationItem type: Journal Article
Production Planning & Controlvon Dzengelevski, Oliver; Netland, Torbjörn; Wenking, Marian; et al. (2025)This paper develops an empirically-grounded typology of global production networks based on their capability profiles, which allows for the identification of managerial steps to improve a production network’s performance. Clustering our survey data on network capabilities, we find five distinct types of networks: (1) externally focused networks, (2) unfocused networks, (3) low-capability networks, (4) internally focused networks and (5) all-round networks. Based on our statistical analyses of performance differences between clusters and within clusters, we suggest two types of network improvement strategies: Reconfiguration, namely, the change to a structurally similar but higher-performing network type; and calibration, that is, targeted capability adjustments within a given network type. On a conceptual level, we deviate from the atomistic approach taken by network typologies predominant in the literature, reducing complexity not by decomposing networks into their individual subunits but by categorizing their capability profiles and analysing their associated improvement potential. - A Case Study-Based Analysis of Spare Parts Management in the Engineering IndustryItem type: Journal Article

Production Planning & ControlLöffel, Maximilian; Diehlmann, Florian; Zienau, Alexander; et al. (2026)Disasters such as tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes are increasing in frequency and severity, exposing inadequacies of current disaster response systems in developed countries. Our study introduces a public-private emergency collaboration (PPEC) concept for post-disaster food supply, focusing on dual-use warehouses managed by private companies in partnership with public authorities. The research aims to develop and assess the PPEC concept to enhance post-disaster food supply. We model the concept, combining utility analysis for warehouse locations with location-allocation models. Validated through a practice-based research project involving German federal and local authorities and private sector partners, the study examines PPEC feasibility, evaluates benefits for public and private actors, and identifies optimal networks for implementation. Results indicate that collaboration between public authorities and several companies significantly improves emergency response, particularly when the network is developed strategically. The PPEC offers a scalable concept for enhancing disaster management resilience and efficiency, warranting further development. - How teams in networked organisations develop collaborative capabilityItem type: Journal Article

Production Planning & ControlWagner, Stephan M.; Thakur-Weigold, Bublu; Gatti, Federico; et al. (2021)Humanitarian operations are under increasing pressure to improve their efficiency and effectiveness. To support them, a small industry of consultants and other advisors has developed, most of which work pro bono. This article addresses the question of interest to both international humanitarian organisations and their helpers, which is, how to measure and manage the impact of these helpers. Action research based upon interviews and workshops arrives at a conceptual framework to project the effects of humanitarian logistics consulting interventions, key performance indicators and best practices for the governance and steering of humanitarian logistics consulting projects. - Improving operational plant performance in international manufacturing networks: the effects of integrative capabilities and plant rolesItem type: Journal Article
