WeatherDavies, H.C. (2014) - The summer 2021 Switzerland hailstorms: weather situation, major impacts and unique observational dataItem type: Journal Article
WeatherKopp, Jérôme; Schröer, Katharina; Schwierz, Cornelia; et al. (2023)On 28 June and 8 July 2021, all the ingredients for severe convection were present and resulted in severe hailstorms over Switzerland, causing historic damage, as recorded by several insurance companies. The return periods of those events locally exceeded 70–100 years according to the new Swiss hail climatology. A coherent and comprehensive picture of those hailstorms is given by a unique combination of hail observing systems: automatic hail sensors, crowdsourced reports and radar-based algorithms. - The D-Day landing of June 1944Item type: Journal Article
WeatherWelker, Christoph; Bieli, Melanie; Piaget, Nicolas; et al. (2014) - The origins of Storm Ciaran: From diabatic Rossby wave to warm-seclusion cyclone with a sting jetItem type: Journal Article
WeatherVolonté, Ambrogio; Riboldi, Jacopo (2024)The evolution of Storm Ciar & aacute;n was different from what is commonly attributed to windstorms affecting northwest Europe. Ciar & aacute;n initially developed as a diabatic Rossby wave, driven by low-level latent heat release and with negligible upper tropospheric forcing. It then crossed the jet stream, intensifying explosively while developing a low-level warm seclusion and producing extreme near-surface winds, including sting jets. Ciar & aacute;n is an example of an extreme windstorm following this pathway and highlights the need of a systematic assessment of its relevance in our warming climate. - Planning aircraft measurements within a warm conveyor beltItem type: Journal Article

WeatherSanchez-Lorenzo, A.; Calbõ, J.; Wild, M.; et al. (2013) - Performance of the operational ECMWF ensemble in predicting heavy rain associated with the Emilia-Romagna flood in May 2023Item type: Journal Article
WeatherWu, Hei Tung; Hartmuth, Katharina; Wernli, Heini (2025)A devastating flood occurred in May 2023 in the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy following a 2-day period with widespread accumulated precipitation exceeding 150mm. The event was associated with a quasi-stationary upper-level cutoff cyclone. This study investigates the performance of the operational ECMWF ensemble prediction system in capturing the cutoff formation and the occurrence of intense precipitation. The key results are that forecasts with a 1-day lead time were highly accurate and that a predictability jump occurred for lead times larger than 4 days, when the ensemble failed in representing the formation of the cutoff. - The global climate anomaly 1940-1942Item type: Journal Article
