Heinz Isler is known for his unconventional method for the design of shell structures in reinforced concrete. Thanks to the use of numerous physical models in the different design phases, Isler found and controlled new shapes that were difficult to be achieved with traditional analytical tools. The clarity of his three-dimensional structures has profoundly influenced designers working at the interface between the disciplines of architecture and structural engineering. However, it is Isler›s working method, more than the shapes themselves, that remains relevant to contemporary parametric design. Isler›s physical models are the precursors of the computational models that are still adopted today for the generation and control of complex forms. Thanks to the combination of modern computing and three-dimensional visualizations, it is now possible to manipulate complex geometries without the need for in-depth knowledge of either computer codes or experimental model testing techniques. This approach allows the iterative exploration of multiple shapes, until the optimal form is obtained with respect to different design parameters, as Isler did in his model workshop.

The adoption of the computer as a generative design tool has changed the engineering and architectural field, unveiling new possibilities for finding and optimising innovative structural forms. Since the 1960s, various computational methods have been developed as a result of experiences with physical models by pioneers such as Heinz Isler, Frei Otto and Sergio Musmeci. In recent decades, these methods have laid the foundation for the emergence of parametric approaches, having a significant influence on the introduction of artificial intelligence into contemporary structural design techniques.
