The result of a search for flavor changing neutral currents (FCNC) through single top quark production in association with a photon is presented. The study is based on proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 8 TeV using data collected with the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.8 fb−1. The search for tγ events where t → Wb and W → μν is conducted in final states with a muon, a photon, at least one hadronic jet with at most one being consistent with originating from a bottom quark, and missing transverse momentum. No evidence of single top quark production in association with a photon through a FCNC is observed. Upper limits at the 95% confidence level are set on the tuγ and tcγ anomalous couplings and translated into upper limits on the branching fraction of the FCNC top quark decays: ℬ(t → uγ) < 1.3 × 10− 4 and ℬ(t → cγ) < 1.7 × 10− 3. Upper limits are also set on the cross section of associated tγ production in a restricted phase-space region. These are the most stringent limits currently available.

The spectra of strange hadrons are measured in proton-proton collisions, recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC, at centre-of-mass energies of 0.9 and 7 TeV. The K0S, Λ, and Ξ− particles and their antiparticles are reconstructed from their decay topologies and the production rates are measured as functions of rapidity and transverse momentum, p T. The results are compared to other experiments and to predictions of the Pythia Monte Carlo program. The p T distributions are found to differ substantially from the Pythia results and the production rates exceed the predictions by up to a factor of three.

The first measurement of the CP structure of the Yukawa coupling between the Higgs boson and tau leptons is presented. The measurement is based on data collected in proton-proton collisions at root s = 13 TeV by the CMS detector at the LHC, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb(-1). The analysis uses the angular correlation between the decay planes of tau leptons produced in Higgs boson decays. The effective mixing angle between CP-even and CP-odd tau Yukawa couplings is found to be -1 +/- 19 degrees, compared to an expected value of 0 +/- 21 degrees at the 68.3% confidence level. The data disfavour the pure CP-odd scenario at 3.0 standard deviations. The results are compatible with predictions for the standard model Higgs boson.

The Monster CFT plays an important role in moonshine and is also conjectured to be the holographic dual to pure gravity in AdS3. We investigate the entanglement and Rényi entropies of this theory along with other extremal CFTs. The Rényi entropies of a single interval on the torus are evaluated using the short interval expansion. Each order in the expansion contains closed form expressions in the modular parameter. The leading terms in the q-series are shown to precisely agree with the universal corrections to Rényi entropies at low temperatures. Furthermore, these results are shown to match with bulk computations of Rényi entropy using the one-loop partition function on handlebodies. We also explore some features of Rényi entropies of two intervals on the plane.

First measurements of dihadron correlationsfor charged particles are presented for central PbPb collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 2.76TeV over a broad range in relative pseudorapidity (∆η) and the full range of relative azimuthal angle (∆ϕ). The data were collected with the CMS detector, at the LHC. A broadening of the away-side (∆ϕ ≈ π) azimuthal correlation is observed at all ∆η, as compared to the measurements in pp collisions. Furthermore, long-range dihadron correlations in ∆η are observed for particles with similar ϕ values. This phenomenon, also known as the “ridge”, persists up to at least |∆η| = 4. For particles with transverse momenta (p T) of2-4 GeV/c, the ridge is found to be most prominent when these particles are correlated with particles of p T = 2-6 GeV/c, and to be much reduced when paired with particles of p T = 10-12 GeV/c.
  • Structure of the N = 4 chiral algebra
    Item type: Journal Article

The chiral algebra of 4D 𝒩 = 4 SU(N) super-Yang-Mills theory is an 𝒩 = 4 superconformal vertex operator algebra. We analyse the structure of this algebra by studying recursively the constraints that are required by the associativity of the operator product expansion. We find that the algebra is uniquely characterized by the central charge (which can take an arbitrary value), without any additional free parameter. Furthermore, the truncation pattern of the OPE coefficients suggests that the algebra cannot arise from the symmetric orbifold.

The measurements of the Higgs boson (H) production cross sections performed by the CMS Collaboration in the four-lepton (4ℓ, ℓ = e, μ) final state at a center-of-mass energy ⎷s = 13.6 TeV are presented. These measurements are based on data collected with the CMS detector at the CERN LHC in 2022, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 34.7 fb−1. Cross sections are measured in a fiducial region closely matching the experimental acceptance, both inclusively and differentially, as a function of the transverse momentum and the absolute value of the rapidity of the four-lepton system. The H → ZZ → 4ℓ inclusive fiducial cross section is measured to be 2.89-0.49+0.53(stat)-0.21+0.29(syst) fb, in agreement with the standard model expectation of 3.09-0.24+0.27 fb.
