Polysaccharides are the dominant stocks of bioavailable carbon on the planet. While much progress has been made in understanding the enzymatic mechanisms of polysaccharide breakdown by microbes, the role of cell-cell interactions in enabling microbes to breakdown complex polysaccharides is less understood. Leveraging microfl uidics coupled to automated microscopy allows an understanding the role of cell-cell interactions in polysaccharide degradation by microbes.

Haploid mouse embryonic stem cells are a handy tool to investigate loss of function mutations. Furthermore, these cells can contribute to chimeric embryos and can be used to introduce genetic modifications into mouse germ lines. Nevertheless, haploid cell cultures have to be maintained by flow sorting on a regular basis due to spontaneous diploidization. Here we present physical differences between haploid and diploid cells, which can be used in applied cell sorting of haploid cell cultures.

Hydrogels are water-swollen polymer networks that are widely used as scaffold materials in 3D cell biology and tissue engineering. Biologists have commonly used hydrogels generated from natural extracellular matrix (ECM) polymers, which present challenges for biomedical applications due to their natural origin. Synthetic hydrogels are fabricated with fully defi ned material properties and can be modifi ed to mimic the ECM. In this article, we discuss the design, recent applications and power of synthetic hydrogels for 3D tissue models. (© 2020 Springer).
