- Generation Change in Georgia? Caucasus Barometer ResultsItem type: Journal Issue
Caucasus Analytical Digest (CAD)Khoshtaria, Tamar; Turmanidze, Koba; Atchaidze, Makhare; et al. (2024)This issue addresses the debate on whether we are witnessing a relatively rapid and substantial shift in attitudes in Georgia, particularly among the youth. It does so by analysing data from the Caucasus Barometer survey, the most extensive publicly available study of public opinion in the region. The contributions in this issue examine three interconnected topics: media consumption patterns (use of and trust in different sources of information), attitudes toward political participation (including attitudes to democracy), and perceptions of the past (focusing on the Soviet Union and, separately, Stalin as leader). - Responses to Covid-19: Displaced Persons / International AidItem type: Journal Issue
Caucasus Analytical Digest (CAD)Pape, Ulla; Isabekova, Gulnaz (2022)The topic of this issue is Responses to Covid-19: Displaced Persons / International Aid. Ulla Pape investigates the socio-economic situation of the internally displaced populations in the South Caucasus, with a special focus on their vulnerability to the impact of COVID-19; Gulnaz Isabekova analyzes “Team Europe”, which supported immediate needs and subsequent recovery from the pandemic in the spirit of economic and environmental sustainability in the South Caucasus, but also has far-reaching geopolitical objectives to be achieved by increasing the competitiveness and influence of European aid abroad. - Georgia’s Political Crisis: Actors and Instruments of PolarizationItem type: Journal Issue
Caucasus Analytical Digest (CAD)Gelashvili, Tamta; Kandelaki, Salome; Kavtaradze, Lasha (2021)This issue of the Caucasus Analytical Digest focuses on polarization as a key characteristic of Georgian politics, more specifically on key actors and instruments of this polarization: right wing groups, media and the Georgian Orthodox Church. Tamta Gelashvili examines the role of the far right in political polarization; Salome Kandelaki analyzes radicalization and illiberal tendencies in Georgia by focusing on the role of one of the most powerful actors involved, the Georgian Orthodox Church (GOC); Lasha Kavtaradze problematizes the role of the Georgian mainstream media in the current polarized political environment. - Iran and the South Caucasus after the Second Karabakh WarItem type: Journal Issue
Caucasus Analytical Digest (CAD)Koolaee, Elaheh; Rashidi, Ahmad; Yeo, Alexander; et al. (2024)The papers in this issue address the regional dynamics following the Second Karabakh War of 2020. Iran has found itself having more and more of a foot in the South Caucasus as a result. The prospects and modalities of the so-called ‘Zangezur Corridor’ (a proposed land connection between Azerbaijan proper and its exclave of Nakhchivan/Nakhichevan) include economic, geopolitical, strategic, cultural, and ideological components, perceived in various ways in Baku and Yerevan, in Tbilisi and Tehran. Besides the security outcomes and aftermaths since 2020, the contributions in this issue also take on historical developments and how they impact current bilateral ties. - Pension ReformItem type: Journal Issue
Caucasus Analytical Digest (CAD)Shakhmuradyan, Gayane; Aroshvili, Alexandra; Chivadze, Tornike; et al. (2020)The topic of this issue is pension reform. Firstly, Gayane Shakhmuradyan argues that despite the continued public disapproval of the mandatory funded scheme, the Armenian pension system is now more sustainable and robust, and economic inefficiencies are being overcome. Secondly, Alexandra Aroshvili and Tornike Chivadze point out that the privatization of the Georgian pension scheme cannot adequately meet the needs of current and future pensioners. Their main criticism is that there is neither a basic pension nor any redistribution mechanism, which leads to injustice between the generations. Thirdly, Gubad Ibadoghlu provides an overview of the current state of the pension system in Azerbaijan. He believes that the current pension system in Azerbaijan is not sustainable in the long run and should be reformed. In particular, the social security principle should be strengthened, and non-insurance benefits by the state should be reduced. - Azerbaijan's International RelationsItem type: Journal Issue
Caucasus Analytical Digest (CAD)Safiyev, Rail; Valiyev, Anar; Agamirzayev, Rauf; et al. (2025)Focusing on Azerbaijan’s international relations, the first three contributions deal with the deteriorating relations between Azerbaijan and Russia. They examine the recent events and analyse their impact on Azerbaijan’s economy, especially regarding the multiple transportation projects in the South Caucasus both countries are involved in, and the effects on the Azerbaijani diaspora in Russia, suggesting that Russia is using migration as a weapon. The fourth contribution looks at Azerbaijan’s relations with Israel in the context of a possible membership Azerbaijan’s in the US-brokered “Abraham Accords”. - Forced Displacement: Refugees and Internally Displaced Persons in the South CaucasusItem type: Journal Issue
Caucasus Analytical Digest (CAD)Heinrich, Andreas; Dinev, Ivaylo; Douglas, Nadja; et al. (2025)The special issue deals with the problem of forced migration and protracted displacement in the South Caucasus. While the phenomenon has plagued the region since the late years of the Soviet Union, the more recent outbreaks of violence between Armenia, the regime in Nagorno-Karabakh, and Azerbaijan have ignited new waves of displacement. Based on interviews and surveys, the issue examines the respective government efforts to cope with the huge influx of refugees and internally displaced persons, how the governments attempted to integrate these persons in the local communities, and how governments have fostered a return of the displaced persons. - Disinformation in GeorgiaItem type: Journal Issue
Caucasus Analytical Digest (CAD)Turmanidze , Koba; Bandzeladze , Tinatin; Chkhetiani , Lia; et al. (2026)The systematic deployment of disinformation campaigns by nondemocratic actors, including state-led narratives, poses a profound threat to Georgia's democratic resilience. Given that these campaigns are designed to influence people’s pro-Western sentiments, deepen polarization, and erode institutional trust, identifying which specific segments of the population are most susceptible to manipulation is essential for formulating effective countermeasures. Collectively the four contributions in this special issue address this task on the basis of representative public opinion surveys. - Public Opinion in Georgia: New Caucasus Barometer ResultsItem type: Journal Issue
Caucasus Analytical Digest (CAD)Mestvirishvili, Natia; Mestvirishvili, Maia; Sichinava, David; et al. (2018) - Local Dimensions of the Nagorno-Karabakh ConflictItem type: Journal Issue
Caucasus Analytical Digest (CAD)Smolnik, Franziska; Alieva, Leila; Shirinian, Tamar; et al. (2021)This issue of the Caucasus Analytical Digest deals with Local Dimensions of the Nagorno-Karabakh Conflict. Firstly, Leila Alieva explores the securitization/de-securitization processes and attitudes towards the conflict in Azerbaijan in the periods before, during, and after the 2020 conflict in Karabagh; secondly, Tamar Shirinian discusses the affective connections between the two spectres of soldiers who are missing or who have died in action and the old political economic elite who now threaten to regain power, and the political implications of national trauma on Armenia’s post-war futures; thirdly, John O’Loughlin, Gerard Toal, and Kristin Bakke analyse the somewhat contradictory results of a February 2020 survey of inhabitants of Karabakh concerning the questions of territory and peace.
