Architecture PhilosophyTeerds, Hans (2023)In this interview Margaret Crawford shares her experiences and research on public space. She became known with her examination of shopping malls, an essay that was published in Michael Sorkin's edited volume Variations on a Theme Park (1992). A few years later, however, she concluded that we was way to pessimistic about these malls - as she started to recognise and analyse public life both within the malls, as well as outside it, tracing how teenagers and families use the mall, as well as the phenomenon of garage sales and other street life. From there on, she discusses the current challenges in public space: the increasing privatisation and segregation, as well as increasing use of violence by police forces. - Designing a Common World: Public Responsibility and the Aim to Objectify ArchitectureItem type: Journal Article
Architecture PhilosophyTeerds, Hans (2020)This article discusses a current trend in the field of architecture to overcome the inherent aspects of subjectivity within the design process. It argues that the objective to be objective is quite dangerous, as it diminishes the room for architects and other involved in the process of design and construction to take public responsibility for the designed object. With a reference to the writings of Arendt, the article embeds design and subjectivity in the larger framework of the 'world-in-common', and defines 'design' as a form of 'judgment'.
