In this Letter, we establish Yangian symmetry of planar N = 4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory. We prove that the classical equations of motion of the model close onto themselves under the action of Yangian generators. Moreover, we propose an off-shell extension of our statement, which is equivalent to the invariance of the action and prove that it is exactly satisfied. We assert that our relationship serves as a criterion for integrability in planar gauge theories by explicitly checking that it applies to the integrable Aharony-Bergman-Jafferis-Maldacena theory but not to the nonintegrable N = 1 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory.

Recently, it was demonstrated that one-loop energy shifts of spinning superstrings on AdS5 x S5 agree with certain Bethe equations for quantum strings at small effective coupling. However, the string result required artificial regularization by zeta-function. Here we show that this matching is indeed correct up to fourth order in effective coupling; beyond, we find new contributions at odd powers. We show that these are reproduced by quantum corrections within the Bethe ansatz. They might also identify the “three-loop discrepancy” between string and gauge theory as an order-of-limits effect.

In this article, we establish the notion of classical Yangian symmetry for planar N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory and for related planar gauge theories. After revisiting Yangian invariance for the equations of motion, we describe how the bilocal generators act on the action of the model such that the latter becomes exactly invariant. In particular, we elaborate on the relevance of the planar limit and how to act nonlinearly with bilocal generators on the cyclic action.

We compute the dilatation generator in the 𝔰⁢𝔲⁡(2) sector of planar 𝒩 =4 super-Yang-Mills theory at four loops. We use the known world-sheet scattering matrix to constrain the structure of the generator. The remaining few coefficients can be computed directly from Feynman diagrams. This allows us to confirm previous conjectures for the leading contribution to the dressing phase which is proportional to 𝜁⁡(3). .

We rigorously derive an effective quantum mechanical Hamiltonian from N=4 gauge theory in the BMN limit. Its eigenvalues yield the exact one-loop anomalous dimensions of scalar two-impurity BMN operators for all genera. It is demonstrated that this reformulation vastly simplifies computations. E.g. the known anomalous dimension formula for genus one is reproduced through a one-line calculation. We also efficiently evaluate the genus two correction, finding a non-vanishing result. We comment on multi-trace two-impurity operators and we conjecture that our quantum-mechanical reformulation could be extended to higher quantum loops and more impurities.

In this paper we work out the RTT realization for the Yangian algebra of the Hubbard model and anti-de Sitter/conformal field theory correspondence. We find that this Yangian algebra is of a non-standard type in which the levels of the Yangian mix. The crucial feature that allows this is a braiding factor that deforms the coproduct and generates the central extensions of the underlying gl(2|2) Lie algebra. In our RTT realization we have also been able to incorporate the so-called secret symmetry and we were able to extend it to higher Yangian levels. Finally, we discuss the center of the Yangian and the automorphisms related to crossing symmetry.
