    Bulletin zur schweizerischen Sicherheitspolitik
The 2020 issue of the Bulletin is devoted almost exclusively to Switzerland's corona crisis management during the first wave in the first half of 2020. The first contribution is an interview with the Chief of the Swiss Armed Forces Thomas Süssli. In the subsequent six articles, our authors deal with recommendations for the development of the legal and planning framework for coping with pandemics, pandemic preparedness in Switzerland (Andrin Hauri, Kevin Kohler, Benjamin Scharte, Andreas Wenger), a chronology of crisis management in the corona pandemic’s first phase (Kevin Kohler, Andrin Hauri, Benjamin Scharte, Jan Thiel, Andreas Wenger), the pandemic as a learning opportunity (Andreas Wenger, Andrin Hauri, Kevin Kohler, Benjamin Scharte, Jan Thiel), Switzerland in the European crisis management (Julian Kamasa, Jan Thiel), the Swiss Armed Forces on corona deployment (Michael Haas, Annabelle Vuille) and the new CSS project on the future of nuclear arms control (Oliver Thränert).

    Item type: Other Publication
    Kamasa, Julian (2021)
    CSS Analyses in Security Policy
The interplay of a pandemic, extreme weather events and geopolitical power dynamics have exposed the fragile networks underpinning the semiconductor industry. Because microchips are almost indispensable in daily life, the current shortage situation raises questions about supply chain security.

  • Kamasa, Julian (2021)
Strategic Trends ~ Strategic Trends 2021: Key Developments in Global Affairs
The departure of the United Kingdom from the EU has considerable implications for the European security architecture. Although the UK continues to be part of NATO, it might not suffice to use NATO as a forum for comprehensive coordination, since it is primarily a military alliance. Therefore, new settings for the coordination of essential policies between London and its key European partners seem necessary. In the short and medium terms, a trilateral form of security cooperation among France, Germany, and the UK such as the E3 could bridge the gaps created by Brexit.
  • Haas, Michael; Kamasa, Julian; Larsen, Henrik Boesen Lindbo; et al. (2020)

  • Die Internetfreiheit auf dem Rückzug
    Item type: Other Publication
    Kamasa, Julian (2020)
  • Securing Europe’s Supply of Rare Earths
    Item type: Other Publication
    Kamasa, Julian (2023)
    CSS Policy Perspectives
The supply chain for rare earths needed for green technologies is dominated by China. To mitigate supply risks, European countries must invest in domestic mining, processing, and recycling capacities as well as international cooperation.
  • Die Sicherung zukünftiger 5G-Netze
    Item type: Other Publication
    Kamasa, Julian (2020)
    CSS Policy Perspectives
  • Strategic Trends 2021
    Item type: Edited Volume
Carlson, Brian G.; Kamasa, Julian; Maduz, Linda; et al. (2021)
    Strategic Trends
Strategic Trends 2021 offers a concise analysis of major developments in world affairs, with a primary focus on international security. In the first chapter, Brian G. Carlson explores the impact of the China-Russia relationship on transatlantic security. In the second chapter, Julian Kamasa assesses the potential for security cooperation among France, Germany, and Britain in the E3 and other formats following Brexit. In the third chapter, Niklas Masuhr analyzes Turkey’s recent military interventions. He notes the limited success of them and their reliance on Russia’s acquiescence in them. In the fourth chapter, Lisa Watanabe describes how the US retreat from the Middle East has allowed other powers, especially Russia and China, to strengthen their involvement in the region. In the final chapter, Linda Maduz analyzes the responses by Japan and South Korea to China’s rise and to concerns about continued US engagement in Asia.
