Structures in Fire SiF'2018 : 10th International Conference on Structures in Fire, Belfast, United Kingdom, 6-8 June 2018
An accurate measurement of the temperature during fire tests is of utmost importance. The measuring device used therefore (1) shall indicate the exact temperatures in the specimen and (2) shall not disturb its temperature field. For timber as a low conductive material this is particularly difficult. The paper presents five standard fire tests (four cross laminated timber panels and one solid timber panel), in which eight different thermocouple designs and installations were investigated. The tests showed that any thermocouple design installed in boreholes perpendicular to the isotherms leads to considerably lower measurements than wire thermocouples placed parallel to the isotherms. Referring to the time when the measurement indicates 300°C the difference is between 10 and 35 min. An installation parallel to the isotherms is found to be accurate, while perpendicular to them suffers from significant heat loss through conduction in the thermocouple. Additionally, missing contact pressure between the thermocouple and the sample increases the temperature discrepancy. Convection in the tight gaps between the thermocouple and the borehole does not happen in usual configuration and hence has no effect on the measured temperature. For proper temperature measurements in timber, it is thus recommended to install thermocouples parallel to the isotherms, to use thermocouples with fewest possible conductive material and a high contact pressure.

Timber buildings are becoming more prevalent globally and engineers and approval authorities look for suitable guidance to assist with construction. Researchers publish valuable papers on the fire safety of timber and its use for the built environment, that are being used by the engineering community at a fast pace. It has become clear to the authors that terminology specifically related to the fire safety of timber buildings is not always consistent between published research, available guidance and engineering application. This can lead to misinterpretation of published results and the applicability, potentially resulting in errors in engineering design and approval. To assist the research, engineering and approvals community this paper identifies a number of relatively commonly used terms and recommends definitions and guidance for use. The motivation is that these definitions can be adopted and be improved for clarity when they are used for education purposes or applied to the fire safety design of timber structures. Consistency in terminology use between researchers, engineers and officials can only positively assist with the continued growth of timber construction.

For the assessment of the fire resistance of timber members, the virgin wood has to be documented for a proper evaluation of any fire test result. However, actual fire resistance standards disregard the need to document the virgin cross-section. Numerous ad-hoc methods appeared around the world in labs and research facilities comprising a variety of methods from single ruler measurements to the determination of the virgin cross-section with temperature measurements. Especially for plane members such as cross-laminated timber (CLT), old-fashioned measurements as well as applied temperature measurements fail due to several reasons discussed in this paper, i.e. the variability of results and the misleading temperature measurements due to wrongly installed thermocouples. Following the advances in digital image processing, it is proposed to consequently apply these novel techniques for the measurement of the charring of timber, which is an essential input for the verification of the fire resistance and the development of future calculation models. Final recommendations base on the type of specimen (linear or plane member) and the test environment. For plane members such as CLT, 3D-image processing using photography is recommended for further use. For labs not having access to advanced techniques and required knowhow, a methodology for a minimum number of manual measurements has developed and presented in this paper.
