Proceedings of the 2018 IEEE/MTT-S International Microwave Symposium (IMS)Burla, Maurizio; Bonjour, Romain; Salamin, Yannick; et al. (2018)Radically novel approaches will be needed to support the 1,000 times increase in data rates expected from next-generation wireless communications (5G). Integrated microwave photonics (IMWP) techniques have been identified as an enabling technology for 5G, as they have the potential to improve the performance of electronics by leveraging the broadband characteristics and flexibility of operation of photonic integrated circuits. Important applications of IMWP are optical signal generation and distribution of mm-waves towards antenna terminals, frequency-reconfigurable filtering, optical control of antenna arrays, and more. The rapidly growing field of plasmonics has shown a breakthrough in performance for optical modulators with ultra-fast operation and ultra-compact footprint (10s μm 2 ). This paper reports recent achievements on the use of integrated plasmonic devices for millimeter-wave signal conversion and processing for next-generation wireless systems. - Plasmonic Modulators for Microwave Photonics ApplicationsItem type: Conference Paper

Nano LettersSalamin, Yannick; Heni, Wolfgang; Haffner, Christian; et al. (2015)A scheme for the direct conversion of millimeter and THz waves to optical signals is introduced. The compact device consists of a plasmonic phase modulator that is seamlessly cointegrated with an antenna. Neither high-speed electronics nor electronic amplification is required to drive the modulator. A built-in enhancement of the electric field by a factor of 35 000 enables the direct conversion of millimeter-wave signals to the optical domain. This high enhancement is obtained via a resonant antenna that is directly coupled to an optical field by means of a plasmonic modulator. The suggested concept provides a simple and cost-efficient alternative solution to conventional schemes where millimeter-wave signals are first converted to the electrical domain before being up-converted to the optical domain. - The Path towards 100 Gbit/s Wireless CommunicationsItem type: Conference Paper
Proceedings of the XXXIInd URSI General Assembly in MontrealLeuthold, Juerg; Bonjour, Romain; Burla, Maurizio; et al. (2017)Wireless communication links with capacities above 100 Gbit/s require sub-THz carrier frequencies, pencil beams, usage of novel modulation techniques and novel photonic-electronic devices. We review recent high-speed wireless link demonstrations and discuss steps to make such systems more viable. - Microwave Plasmonics: A Novel Platform for RF PhotonicsItem type: Conference Paper
