    Im Sommer 2017 hat die ETH-Bibliothek nach rund dreijähriger Projektphase eine neue Publikationsplattform für die Forschenden der ETH Zürich in Betrieb genommen. Über die Plattform mit dem Namen Research Collection können ETH-Angehörige ihren Forschungsoutput für die akademische Berichterstattung und für die Erzeugung von Publikationslisten auf ihren Webseiten erfassen, ihre Open-Access-Texte publizieren und zudem ihre Forschungsdaten archivieren oder öffentlich zugänglich machen. Der Vortrag stellt das Projekt, im Rahmen dessen die Research Collection entwickelt und zugleich zwei Vorgängersysteme abgelöst wurden, vor. Neben Aspekten der Projektorganisation werden die konzeptionellen Grundlagen für das Repository erläutert. Die entwickelten Workflows und Features werden veranschaulicht, ebenso wie die Einbindung der Plattform in die Informationsinfrastruktur der Hochschule. Im Fokus steht dabei die Frage, mit welchen Herausforderungen sich eine Bibliothek bei der Entwicklung einer Plattform, die drei Aufgaben unter einem Dach vereinen soll (Bibliographie / Open-Access-Repository / Forschungsdaten-Repository) konfrontiert sieht. Nach einem knappen Jahr regulären Betriebs kann zudem ein erstes Fazit in Bezug auf die Praxistauglichkeit der im Projekt erarbeiteten Prozesse und Lösungen gezogen werden.

    In June 2020, ETH Zurich’s Research Collection celebrated its 3rd anniversary. The Research Collection serves as an institutional repository for ETH Zurich that can host both publications as well as research data and is run by the E-Publishing team at ETH Library. Publishing research data and advising customers on research data specific questions in the publishing workflow has emerged as a new field of activity for the team. With over 700 research data items published over the last years, we have now gained a good understanding of the actual uses cases for publishing data in an institutional repository at a large university for science and technology. We regularly talk to researchers about the incentives and requirements for publishing their data and monitor what kind of data, which formats and file sizes they deposit. In this talk, we share and discuss our insights with the Swiss research data community. We will presents statistics on the types of deposited datasets and talk about the challenges of bridging publishing and preservation requirements in a research data repository. We also discuss how we set up our workflows for checking datasets for formal quality criteria and compliance with institutional policies. Finally yet importantly, we give an overview of recently released new features and ongoing development projects such as a new interface that enables ETH researchers to deposit datasets directly from the data management tool openBIS, or a new solution to publish very large datasets via the Research Collection.

    Research Data Management (RDM) is an integral part of scientific practice. The responsibility for RDM therefore lies with individual researchers, but service units of universities can support researchers’ efforts with appropriate service offers. From the point of view of the institution, this helps to streamline operations towards effective and efficient solutions. We outline here the RDM services provided to researchers at ETH Zurich by ETH Scientific IT Services and ETH Library. We comment on current experiences and open issues.
