Rotating filters promise many advantages for long-term separation processes of complex media such as cell cultures, but have never been commercialized on a large scale due to practical challenges and limited scalability. A bearingless spinfilter circumvents many of the drawbacks, yet additional considerations must be taken into account. Thus, an existing particle-force based model for cross-flow filtration, dependent on the membrane shear rate and the transmembrane pressure, is adapted to the spinfilter and predicts the behavior of retained particles at the membrane. Computational fluid dynamics simulations allow to calculate the shear rate at the membrane for the model. Additionally, with the simulated distribution of the shear rate and the energy dissipation rate within the spinfilter, a prediction of the hydrodynamic stress on cell cultures can be made. The model is verified with a spinfilter prototype on a yeast cell culture and is in good agreement with experimental results. Additional separation experiments with bovine blood serve to indicate the extent of cell damage induced by hydrodynamic stress within the spinfilter. The results demonstrate that operating the spinfilter at the optimum operation point leads to a faster separation process at a lower level of cell damage per volume of filtrate in comparison to a passive tangential flow filtration in hollow fibers.

Silicon carbide (SiC) semiconductors enable more and more medium voltage (MV) applications, but their fast switching transients lead to undesired effects as e.g. oscillations in transformer windings due to parasitic capacitances. In order to consider these effects/parasitics in the design process, this paper presents an analytical model of the electric energy/capacitance per unit length within the winding window of foil-wound transformers. The model is based on calculating the electrical energy within basic regions using Schwarz-Christoffel (SC) transformations. It also considers the potential distribution introduced by the voltage-drop between different turns and achieves an error below 3% compared to FEM simulations. The model can be used for calculating comprehensive lumped element equivalent circuits and is based on computationally efficient analytical equations.

Hybrid transformers (HT) are a promising concept to increase the grid flexibility. In the past, only HT with bidirectional auxiliary converter have been investigated. In this paper, HT with unidirectional auxiliary converter, which are advantageous in terms of reliability, cost and complexity, are investigated and their operational limits are derived.

A magneto-optical current measurement system based on the Faraday effect is evaluated for measuring fast pulse currents in high power applications. The current measurement system is based on the interaction of the magnetic field, generated by the current, and a beam of light propagating through magneto-optical material which is in close proximity to the current conductor. A high local magnetic field per ampère current inside the optical path is required to improve the accuracy and the sensitivity of the optical current measurement sensor. In this paper, the relation between the conductor geometry and the local magnetic field distribution is analytically modelled resulting in the geometry factor Kg. The analytical model enables an optimisation of the busbar geometry to increase the overall probe sensitivity and the accuracy of the optical current measurement system.
