    As bicycling as a mode of transport for everyday mobility gains increasing interest from both the public and from policy makers in Germany (Abt. 3 Verkehrsplanung, Referat für Stadt- planung und Bauordnung, Landeshauptstadt München, 2015) (Senatsverwaltung für Umwelt, Verkehr und Klimaschutz, n.d.) (Tomik, 2018), the need to include bicycling in the transport models that support policy evaluation procedures becomes pressing. This study used an online stated preference survey and discrete choice modelling to investigate the effects of route environment attributes on bicyclists’ route choice in Berlin, Germany. Included among the attributes were two urban design characteristics, complexity and streetscape design. Both multinomial logit models with interaction parameters and mixed logit models with random coefficients were estimated. The results of these models show that both urban design characteristics have a significant effect on the route choice of bicyclists. The results also confirmed many hypotheses concerting the effects of route environment attributes, including several related to pavement types, motorized traffic volumes, and bicycle type used by the bicyclist. The results are also suitable to use as input for traffic modelling programs such as MATSim (Horni, Nagel, & Axhausen, 2016).

    In a context of limited multimodal integration, private car and connecting short-haul flights account for a wide proportion of the access and egress legs to/from hub airports. This increases the carbon footprint of air transport and limits the airport’s capacity available for much demanded long-haul flights. High-speed rail services are seen as an opportunity to improve long-distance airport accessibility. However, it remains unclear if ‘hard’ infrastructure measures are enough or even worthwhile if not accompanied by ‘soft’ measures such as integrated ticketing and coordinated scheduling. This work evaluates the benefits of air-rail timetable synchronisation. To evaluate how this solution can improve door-to-door journeys, an agent-based model called J-TAP has been developed and put at work to implement a long-distance multimodal travel model. The timetable synchronisation solution has been applied to a case study focused on a Spanish continent-island domestic connection: Valencia-Lanzarote. Three scenarios have been considered: current conditions, high-speed direct connection to the airport, and high-speed direct connection with synchronised timetables. The results show a substantial reduction of the travel time and significant improvement of passenger experience when timetables are synchronised, boosting rail modal share from 35% to up to 50% in the Valencia-Madrid leg and reducing emissions by 21%. This unveils the potential of intermodal solutions for improving transport efficiency and environmental sustainability.

    TRANSIT Deliverable
    This document gathers the main results and the lessons learnt of the TRANSIT project. The project has delivered three Solutions: the TRANSIT Intermodality Assessment Framework, which enables the evaluation of the impact of innovative intermodal transport solutions on the quality, efficiency and resilience of the door-to-door passenger journey; the TRANSIT Intermodal Timetable Synchronisation solution, which enables the design of synchronised timetables between air transport and ground public transport modes; and the TRANSIT Intermodal Disruption Management Tool, which provides a mechanism for information sharing and coordination between ATM and ground transport suppliers for the tactical management of unplanned disruptions in the airport access modes. This document describes each of these solutions, deriving conclusions, recommendations and avenues for future research aimed at paving the way to seamless integration of aviation into the multimodal European transport system.

    TRANSIT Deliverable
    This document describes the transport modelling and optimisation tools developed as part of the TRANSIT project, including links to the relevant code repositories and associated technical documentation. Taking as a basis the agent-based transport modelling frameworks C-TAP and MATSim, the project has developed the following enhancements: (i) the C-TAP model of continuous long-distance travel has been updated to render it capable of dealing with multimodal transport networks in an efficient manner; (ii) the MATSim framework for the simulation of daily travel has been enhanced with the ability to model passenger reactions to multimodal passenger information systems; (iii) new optimisation algorithms have been developed to implement two intermodal solutions: the AMAN/DMAN Ground Tool (ADGT), a tactical coordination mechanism that is able to generate a new flight schedule when a disruption on the access mode to the airport occurs, and the Timetable Synchronisation Tool, a strategic coordination tool that synchronises ground and air transport timetables to offer a more robust multimodal schedule. In the next stage of the project, the newly developed framework will be used to implement long distance travel models of Spain and France and evaluate the proposed intermodal solutions and information services in a variety of scenarios.
