  • University-Industry Knowledge Interaction in Switzerland: What University Scientists Think about Co-operation with Private Enterprises

    This study explores the factors determining the propensity of Swiss science institutions at the level of a single institute or department to interact with private enterprises in Switzerland (universities and other research institution), i.e. to get involved in knowledge and technology transfer (KTT) activities in order to provide firms with scientific knowledge in research fields which are relevant for their own innovation activities, collect practical experience for students and university staff as well as test the applicability of new research results. We are especially interested in the different forms of this interaction, not only through joint research projects but also through training, mobility of academic personnel, jointly supervised master theses and PhDs, consulting and so on. Moreover, we also study the determinants of commercialization of university research output that takes the form of patenting, licensing or spin-offs. The data used in this study were collected in the course of a survey among institutes of all three types of science institutions in Switzerland (federal institutions, cantonalal universities and regional universities of applied sciences) using a questionnaire.

    Die Vorteile einer Kreislaufwirtschaft sind für die Schweiz aufgrund des beschränkten Ressourcenvorkommens besonders gross. Die Resultate der vorliegenden Studie zeigen jedoch, dass der Transformationsprozess auf Unternehmensebene noch nicht weit fortgeschritten ist. Zudem gibt es Hinweise, dass die Transformation ein länger dauernder Prozessist. Die abwartende Haltung vieler Unternehmen könnte sich bei zunehmender Verknappung wichtiger natürlicher Ressourcen deshalb negativ auf deren Wettbewerbsfähigkeit auswirken. Die Voraussetzungen für eine Beschleunigung der Transformation sind in der Schweiz allerdings gut. Die Schweiz könnte als eines der innovativsten Länder der Welt komparative Vorteile nutzen, um zirkuläre Massnahmen effizient umzusetzen und so Wettbewerbsvorteile zu generieren.Deshalb wäre es wichtig, aktuell bestehende Hürden gezielt abzubauen. Im Fokus steht dabei die Sensibilisierung der Unternehmen für die Kreislaufwirtschaft, die Diffusion von Anwendungsmöglichkeiten sowie der Abbau von technischenund finanziellen Hürden. Insbesondere Massnahmen zur weiteren Verstärkung der privatwirtschaftlichen Innovationskraft,der Vernetzung der Unternehmen, der Ausbildung und bestimmte Aspekte der Digitalisierung könnten den Transformationsprozess begünstigen.

    Ziel des Statusberichts ist es, abzubilden wie stark Unternehmen in der Schweiz Kreislaufwirtschafts (KLW)- Aktivitäten umsetzen, und wie sich das über die Zeit entwickelt. Der Bericht basiert auf den Daten einer repräsentativen Umfrage bei Unternehmen, welche 2024 nach 2020 zum zweiten Mal für die Schweiz erhoben wurden. Für die Abbildung der KLW-Aktivitäten werden vier Hauptindikatoren verwendet: strategische Verankerung im Geschäftsmodell, Investitionsanteile, Anzahl umgesetzter Aktivitäten und Umsatzanteile. Zwischen den Umfragen 2020 und 2024 zeigt sich vor allem bei der strategischen Verankerung im Geschäftsmodell ein klarer Anstieg. Allerdings hinken Investitionen und konkrete Aktivitäten teilweise hinterher. Grosse Unternehmen sind Vorreiter der Transformation, während bei kleineren Unternehmen die Umsetzung langsamer voranschreitet. Insgesamt gibt es Fortschritte, jedoch mit grossen Unterschieden zwischen Pionieren, dem Mittelfeld und den Einsteigern.
  • Research and development as an initiator of fixed capital investment

    This paper investigates the causal relationship between firms’ R&D expenditures and their investments in fixed capital. It argues that a firm’s R&D expenditures lead to inventions that in turn trigger investments in fixed capital, as the manufacturing of newly invented goods or services requires the creation of additional production capacities. Using firm-level panel data ranging from 1990 to 2014, the paper applies a 2SLS approach to uncover the direction of causality between R&D expenditures and fixed capital investment. To obtain exogenous instruments, the paper exploits shocks to i) technological opportunities and ii) innovative sales of capital goods industries. The results reveal that firms’ R&D expenditures cause subsequent investments in fixed capital, while there is no evidence of the reverse effect. An increase in R&D expenditures of 1% leads to an increase in fixed capital investments between 0.4% and 0.6%. Therefore, increasing R&D expenditures may not only be valuable for long-term economic growth but also, via fixed capital investment, provide the economy with positive stimuli in times of prolonged stagnation.   • Openness and Innovation - Home and Export Demand Effects on Manufacturing Innovation: Panel Data Evidence for Ireland and Switzerland

    Recent studies in the tradition of Schmookler have re-emphasised the potential role of demand in stimulating innovation. Here, we reconsider the role of ‘home’ and ‘export’ market demand in stimulating manufacturing innovation using comparable panel data for two small open economies – Ireland and Switzerland. Our analysis is based on the estimation of reduced form innovation production functions using panel data estimators over the sample period 1994 to 2005. For a range of innovation indicators, however, we find little evidence of any significant market demand effects, with innovation performance instead determined largely by firm-level capability effects and characteristics. In policy and strategy terms this suggests the continued value of measures to improve innovation capability regardless of market demand conditions. In more methodological terms our results suggest the validity of the usual assumption implicit in modelling innovation outputs that supply-side factors predominate.
