    Strategic Trends 2020 offers a concise analysis of major developments in world affairs, with a primary focus on international security. In the first chapter, Jack Thompson explores the main domestic determinants of the US-China rivalry and their implications at the international level. In the second chapter, Michael Haas and Niklas Masuhr show that a military conflict between the US and China is no longer as remote as it once seemed and that both sides are now very actively planning for the eventuality of a major war in the next decade or two. In Chapter 3, Henrik Larsen and Linda Maduz address the implications of China’s targeted influence attempts and of its Belt and Road initiative (BRI) for Europe. In the final chapter, Benno Zogg explores the BRI and its potential effectiveness from a regional perspective, focusing on China’s potential Eurasian zone of influence.

    Nowhere is China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) more evident than in Eurasia, which spans from Central Asia to Eastern Europe. China is transforming this space with physical infrastructure, but also through political and societal engagement. China’s economic clout and the BRI’s land-based component, the ‘Belt’, have already yielded considerable leverage and may allow Beijing significant leeway in shaping the region’s future. But only an assessment of China’s conduct on the ground will help reveal its true intentions and the effects of the transformation it has wrought.

Their close alliance is based on economic and geopolitical considerations. While it is mutually beneficial, it also has its limitations. However, in the midterm, both China and Russia appear to be willing to overlook potential fields of tension, for instance in Central Asia.

Sie befasst sich auch mit der möglichen zukünftigen Entwicklung der OSZE.

    CSS Briefing Note 2017 is dedicated to the recent push for reforms in UN peacekeeping. The UN is focusing on a stronger political component of its peace missions, on conflict prevention, and aims at a comprehensive approach and partnerships with other organizations – however, Member States and bureaucracy severely limit the room for reform. Increased engagement by the West or Switzerland are most likely in the form of technological enablers, civilian or specialized contributions.
