Can we, as researchers of the territory, still investigate and learn about our built and the unbuilt environments through direct experience? Can we rely merely on digital cartographies, or should we still be explorers who embark on journeys of discovery? We have tried to answer these questions by walking in the city in order to discover what is hidden, and by travelling the world of literature in order to arrive at critical insights.

    Item type: Presentation
    Tümerdem, Nazlı (2023)
This walk, conceived and conducted by Nazlı Tümerdem, is an expedition to the near, one that we will be performing in the territory where the ETH ONA building is located. Our aim will be to employ critical walking as an ethnographic and artistic method by going out of the classroom and into the field. Our collective walk will start at the Fokushalle. We will then follow a riparian route along the arms of the Glatt river. In order to explore this (un)familiar landscape, we will slow down to our own walking pace. The walk will conclude in Leutschenpark.
  • Our Energy
    Item type: Journal Article
    Tümerdem, Nazlı (2024)
    Journal of Architectural Education
This paper explores the role of architects, designers, and educators in catalyzing a radical shift towards more just and socioecological energy values and practices by scrutinizing three exercises that were introduced to students as part of a theoretical course on territorial design taught at ETH Zürich in the autumn of 2022.Footnote1 Initially, the text presents the course and then outlines its affiliated lecture series focusing on questions surrounding energy entanglements. Following this, it elaborates on the formulation of the exercises, including their conditions, representation techniques, and templates, giving a selection of student work. The paper aims to serve as an exemplar of how we can, in architectural and design education, offer alternative approaches to teaching and un/learning. By sharing this pedagogical framework, the paper ultimately seeks to disseminate these articulations and thought processes, as a way to initiate a discussion around energy entanglements and imagine novel ways of designing our collective and equitable energy futures.
