Abstract

We present a multistage stochastic programming formulation for monthly production planning of a hydro-thermal system. The formulation explicitly considers the stochasticity from variations in water reservoir inflows and electric energy demand. The problem is solved efficiently applying Nested Benders Decomposition. The solution is implemented in a model predictive control scheme. Closed loop simulation results are shown to illustrate performance of the controller. The solutions of the medium term scheduling problem can then be used as reference inputs for short term planning and lower level controllers to avoid greedy usage of reservoir water.
