Abstract

Given that Zurich has been predicted to accommodate another up to 100 thousand people (20%) in the next decade, the district Altstetten-Albisrieden faces a critical challenge of severe population growth. This urban densification process requires a comprehensive understanding and means to enhance urban transformation based on existing infrastructure and city fabric. The presentation showcases an ongoing research project, Dense and Green Cities, embedded in Future Cities Lab Global (FCL G) Zurich Hub. It investigates the recent performance of Altstetten-Albisrieden in terms of building typology, blue-green infrastructure, urban form, neighbourhood profile and governance instruments. Densification scenarios, Business as Usual and Transformation Potentials enable comparisons and interdisciplinary discussions on urban planning strategies from various perspectives. In the end, research outcomes will be integrated into an open-source application named Global Views, developed by Future Cities Lab Global. First shown are mapping methods for Altstetten-Albisrieden for building typologies, urban form, environment and demographic distribution. The official documents, Zurich 2040 and the Municipal Master Plan define densification challenges as the conflict between increasing building areas and maintaining green spaces for liveability. Selecting building typologies that can optimise green space provision turns out to be a key to future redevelopment. The research approach shown involves stakeholders with different formats. A resident-centralised method combining the needs of stakeholders can benefit the sustainability of future urban transformation.
