Abstract

The performance of a stilling basin with counter-current flow was considered both experimentally and analytically. Depending on the position and height of the counter-current element relative to the approach section either poor boil type flow or effective counter-current type flow are induced. Based on an extended research programme, the optimum basin geometry was determined, together with information regarding the headwall and tailwater heights, and the dimensions of the secondary stilling basin. The design was compared with the 'simple' hydraulic stilling jump basin, and the USBR impact basin. The novel design performs well for high Froude numbers if a small tailwater depth is available.
