Abstract
The topic of this issue is “Nation-Building in 21st Century Azerbaijan: Discourse and Narratives.” Firstly, Ayça Ergun presents an analysis of the origins of nation-building in Azerbaijan focusing on three discourses; secondly, Ceyhun Mahmudlu argues that despite all attempts of the central government to impose nationalist policy, its effects are not the same in all parts of the country; thirdly, Bahruz Samadov examines the reflection of shifts in Azerbaijani national identity in unofficial cultural artefacts (meykhana); lastly, Lamiya Panahova explores the nation-building narratives in the primary education system in terms of existing legislation, everyday practices at schools, and textbooks’ content.
