Abstract

In this chapter, we give a comprehensive introduction to the emerging field of transformational plasmonics. We first review the basics of transformational optics, whereby changes of coordinates in Maxwell's equations lead to the design of novel types of anisotropic heterogeneous media known as metamaterials. Electromagnetic paradigms such as invisibility cloak and carpet are used in order to exemplify the usefulness of this renewed approach to classical optics. We then apply tools of transformational optics to plasmonics. The idea is to control the surface plasmon polariton (SPP) wave trajectories by making changes of coordinates at the interface between a metal and a transformed medium. A number of illustrative examples including a concentrator, an SPP beam shifter, but also a broadband structured plasmonic carpet (demonstrated experimentally for wavelengths ranging from 750 to 900. nm at ICFO in 2010) and a multilayered plasmonic cloak, are given. © 2014 Elsevier B.V.
