Abstract
Adverse effects of climate change disproportionally impact vulnerable groups that historically have contributed the least to global warming (IPCC, 2023). Whereas artificial intelligence (AI) is often framed as “clean tech” in public debate (Nordgren, 2023), it has a dual role in relation to climate change.
In this essay, I analyse ethical issues around AI in relation to climate change across dimensions of equity and power. I argue that we should collectively strive for an ethics centred around justice and democratic governance and for an equitable future for all.
