Abstract
Floods in the Alps often cause bedload aggradation in the lower reaches of rivers. This leads to a reduction of the cross-sectional area of the channel and an overflow of water. To assess the safety against flooding for such areas the bedload potential in the catchment area has to be estimated and compared to the transport capacity of the lower reach. The sensitivity of the results has to be examined considering several scenarios with different magnitudes and varying temporal distribution of bedload input. A numerical mode may be used to simulate bedload transport and morphological changes. To increase the capacity of critical cross sections, several measures are possible. Bridge cross sections, for example, can be modified to allow an impounding effect resulting in flow under pressure below the bridge. The lift forces acting on the bridge are much larger than the drag forces. The forces can be assessed with a simplified buoyancy calculation.
