Abstract
Despite the multiple meanings, pliable uses, and problematic distinctions that the topos and genre of the vedute instigate, the Neapolitan cityscapes show an even higher complexity. A brief overview of the state of research and at the hand of a single image, the paper captures the relationship between the architectural background, the changing multifaceted environment, and the variables that characterize an urban veduta. The aim is to consider the vedute beyond their artistic production, but rather as immersed in complex realities, epistemic systems, and sociopolitical structures that might allow us to study the meaning of architectural mediation in new ways. Considered here as a phenomenon that spans from the end of the 17th century up to the 19th century, the vedute are used to amplify possible spatial meanings embedded in the visual culture. This paper seeks to thematize possible entry points to inquire in which relation the visual culture encompasses, challenges, and changes the spatial representation of cultural, sociopolitical, and perceptional contexts in which architecture and cities operate.
