Toward automatic avalanche detection with Distributed-Acoustic-Sensing leveraging telecommunication infrastructure
(2024)EGUsphereSnow avalanches pose significant threats in alpine regions, leading to considerable human and economic losses. The ability to promptly identify the locations and timing of avalanche events is essential for effective prediction and risk mitigation. Conventional automatic avalanche detection systems typically rely on radars and/or seismo-acoustic sensors. While these systems operate successfully regardless of weather conditions, their ...Other Conference Item -
Multi-scale investigation of the InSight landing site, on Mars, using one-station seismology
(2024)EGUsphereThe internal structure of a planet provides constraints for understanding its evolution and dynamics. In November 2018, the InSight spacecraft landed on Mars and deployed a set of geophysical instruments, including one seismological station. In this work, the subsurface structure at the InSight landing site (ILS) is explored, from the shallow subsurface to crustal depths, by applying single-station seismological techniques (SST) on martian ...Other Conference Item -
High-resolution 3D seismic characterization of an Alpine slope instability using a 1'000 node array
(2024)EGUsphereSlope instabilities, further destabilized by global warming and extreme weather conditions, pose increasing risks to life and property. Hence, understanding these potentially destructive phenomena is crucial to mitigate associated losses. Established approaches like remote sensing and radar-based observations yield important information on surface displacement. However, seismic imaging and monitoring techniques offer complementary insights ...Other Conference Item -
Lake ice seismicity: seismic and acoustic observations
(2024)EGUsphereSeismic events (icequakes) associated with floating ice sheets on lakes are a frequently observed phenomenon. We find at our study site on the frozen Lake St. Moritz in the Swiss Alps typically a clear diurnal pattern with hundreds to thousands of icequake signals per hour during night time, while the rate of observed events during daytime is about two orders of magnitude smaller. The seismicity rate shows a significant correlation with ...Other Conference Item -

Experimental Design for Seismic Mass Movement Monitoring
(2024)EGUsphereMass movements are a significant natural hazard and are expected to increase in frequency as global temperatures rise and extreme weather events become more common. The close observation of mass movements can be essential to minimise their adverse effects on society. The efficient use of the available surveying equipment and resources is important when monitoring mass movements. This is because they are often located in inaccessible ...Other Conference Item -

Microwave Resonant Plasmonic Modulator for Sub-THz Receivers
(2024)Technical Digest Series ~ CLEO 2024A coplanar-waveguide-based resonator is used to enhance plasmonic modulators at 250 GHz by 5 dB with a bandwidth of 44 GHz. This impedance matching is a compact, low-complexity solution to enhance the efficiency at high modulation frequencies for sub-THz wireless communication.Other Conference Item
