Quadrature for hp-Galerkin BEM in R³
(1996)SAM Research ReportThe Galerkin discretization of a Fredholm integral equation of the second kind on a closed, piecewise analytic surface $\Gamma \subset \hbox {R}^3$ is analyzed. High order, $hp$-boundary elements on grids which are geometrically graded toward the edges and vertices of the surface give exponential convergence, similar to what is known in the $hp$ Finite Element Method. A quadrature strategy is developed which gives rise to a fully discrete ...Report -
Specification of GMS access protocol (GAP) version 1.0
(1996)TIK ReportGroup communications require special support for name and address management, QoS support, and connection establishment. The group and session management system (GMS) is a distributed directory system which is specifically designed to support group communication infrastructures. This report briefly introduces the concepts of GMS, the data types available, and then gives a specification of GAP, the GMS access protocol. GaP is specified by ...Report -
Stability analysis for the method of transport
(1996)SAM Research ReportIn this paper, we provide analytical stability estimates for the method of transport. We first prove stability of the second-order method of transport applied to the linear advection equation with constant coefficient in one dimension by using the von Neumann method and with the positive operator technique. In a second step, we extend the proof to the linear advection equation with variable coefficient. Finally, we investigate and compare ...Report -
Convergence of the Arnoldi Process when applied to the Picard-Lindelöf Iteration Operator
(1996)SAM Research ReportIn this paper the iteration operator corresponding to the Picard-Lindelöf iteration is considered as a model case in order to investigate the convergence theory of the Arnoldi process. We ask whether it is possible to use a theorem by Nevanlinna and Vainikko to obtain the spectrum of the local operator. In the cases considered here the answer is no.Report -
Higher order discretisation of initial-boundary value problems for mixed systems
(1996)SAM Research ReportAn initial-boundary value problem for a system of nonlinear partial differential equations, which consists of a hyperbolic and a parabolic part, is taken into consideration. Spacial derivatives are discretised by third order consistent difference operators, which are constructed such that a summation by parts formula holds. Therefore the space discretisation is energy bounded and algebraically stable implicit Runge-Kutta methods can be ...Report -
The Application of Object Oriented Methods to Boundary Element
(1996)SAM Research ReportIn this paper we present the design of a class library to support the development of software for boundary elements. We discuss the extensibility and reusability of the library and give an example of its application.Report -
Asymptotically Optimal Approximation and Numerical Solutions of Differential Equations
(1996)SAM Research ReportAn optimal finite difference method for the numerical solution of the Cauchy problem for a given partial differential equation is, by definition, the scheme that minimises the local truncation error after one step. In this paper we conduct a study of certain extremal problems that are closely related to optimal finite difference schemes for finding numerical solutions of such problems.Report
