Money Makers as Peace Makers?
(2010)Swisspeace Working PapersSince the end of cold war, mediation processes have become more and more complex. Today, peace mediation includes a variety of actors, ranging from states, international organizations, NGOs to the private sector. Despite a growing number of practical examples for business engagement in conflict transformation, there are only a few insights into the contributions of business actors to mediation processes. Thus, the aim of this working paper ...Report -

Mass Preserving Multi-Scale SPH
(2013)Pixar Technical MemoWe present a method for performing very high resolution, incompressible fluid simulations at multiple resolutions of detail, simultaneously. The particle-based method supports user-defined regions of refinement and can handle complex collision boundary conditions while remaining smooth and stable. Conservation of mass in refined detail levels is handled explicitly, overcoming mass-loss problems of previous multi-scale SPH techniques. By ...Report -
On the road between robust optimization and the scenario approach for chance constrained optimization problems
(2012)Report Institute of Automatic Control, ETH ZürichWe propose a new method for solving chance constrained optimization problems which lies between robust (or worst-case) optimization and scenario-based methods. Our method does not require prior knowledge of the underlying probability distribution as in standard robust optimization methods, nor is it based entirely on randomization as in the scenario approach. It instead involves solving a robust optimization problem with bounded uncertainty, ...Report -
Plane Wave Discontinuous Galerkin Methods
(2013)Research ReportWe consider the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation with constant coefficients on a domain with piecewise analytic boundary, modelling the scattering of acoustic waves at a sound soft obstacle. Our discretisation relies on the Trefftz-discontinuous Galerkin approach with plane wave basis functions on meshes with very general element shapes, geometrically graded towards domain corners. We prove exponential convergence of the discrete solution ...Report -
