State-of-the-art modelocked thin-disk lasers (TDL) nowadays deliver several 100s of W of average power in combination with sub-ps pulse durations at MHz repetition rates. Their excellent beam quality and compact footprint, without the need for amplification stages, make them particularly attractive compared to other ultrafast technologies. Modelocked by a semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM), they guarantee reliable turnkey operation and high stability. In this talk, we review the current state-of-the-art of modelocked TDLs, their applications, and discuss guidelines for further power scaling. In particular, we present novel advances in SESAM bonding techniques. In combination with low-loss dielectric top-coatings from ion-beam sputtering machines, these result in ultraflat samples with outstanding heat removal capabilities and excellent surface quality. In the near future, these samples will allow for driving modelocked average powers of TDLs into the kilowatt range Show more
