Average-Case Integrality Gap for Non-Negative Principal Component Analysis
(2020)arXivMontanari and Richard (2015) asked whether a natural semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation can effectively optimize x⊤Wx over ‖x‖=1 with xi≥0 for all coordinates i, where W∈ℝn×n is drawn from the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE) or a spiked matrix model. In small numerical experiments, this SDP appears to be tight for the GOE, producing a rank-one optimal matrix solution aligned with the optimal vector x. We prove, however, that as ...Working Paper -
Adaptive Extreme Edge Computing for Wearable Devices
(2020)arXivWearable devices are a fast-growing technology with impact on personal healthcare for both society and economy. Due to the widespread of sensors in pervasive and distributed networks, power consumption, processing speed, and system adaptation are vital in future smart wearable devices. The visioning and forecasting of how to bring computation to the edge in smart sensors have already begun, with an aspiration to provide adaptive extreme ...Working Paper -

Close Encounters of the European Kind: Economic Integration, Sectoral Heterogeneity and Structural Reforms
(2020)CESifo Working PapersThis paper addresses two main questions: (a) Has European integration hindered the implementation of labour, financial and product market structural reforms? (b) Do the effects of these reforms vary more across sectors than across countries? Using more granular reform measures, longer time windows and a larger sample of countries than previous studies, we confirm that the euro triggered product but neither labour nor financial market ...Working Paper -
Geodesic spaces of low Nagata dimension
(2020)arXivWe show that every geodesic metric space admitting an injective continuous map into the plane as well as every planar graph has Nagata dimension at most two, hence asymptotic dimension at most two. This relies on and answers a question in a very recent work by Fujiwara and Papasoglu. We conclude that all three-dimensional Hadamard manifolds have Nagata dimension three. As a consequence, all such manifolds are absolute Lipschitz retracts.Working Paper
