dc.description.abstract
The Hall resistance is measured in a narrow Hall bar defined in a 2DEG while the conductive tip of a scanning force microscope is scanned across the sample. At zero magnetic field a distinct pattern arises in the scanning gate image which can be related to the potential perturbation caused by the scanning tip and the symmetry of the Hall cross. In the quantum Hall regime l/B‐periodic features are observed in the scanning gate images. Generally the features are sharper than at B=0 and their positions depend on whether the magnetic field is tuned to the beginning or the end of a plateau. An intuitive understanding arises from a network of percolating edge states at the transition between two plateaus and the idea that at a given filling factor the transition is governed by only a few scattering centers.
