The paper presents the technique for specimen preparation of fault rocks and the testing equipment developed at ETH Zurich which allows for applying both high confining pressures and control of pore pressure on both ends of the specimen. The most recent development allows also for measuring the pore pressure at half height of the specimen. The latter permits to control the generation of excess pore pressure effectively and if necessary to modify the applied load rate accordingly. Thanks to this development, executing creep tests is possible where the measured time dependent behaviour is related only to creep and not to excess pore pressure dissipation (consolidation effects). The paper presents also the testing technique to be applied in order to guarantee an adequate saturation degree and to evaluate the relevant parameters for describing elasto-plastic behaviour for the design of support in tunnelling.
