Slavoj Zizek, Giorgio Agamben and Bruno Latour, amongst others, responded as public intellectuals to the political implications of the coronavirus crisis. Zizek and Agamben both took polemical positions in print. Latour, for his part, responded with a survey. This short opinion piece makes a wager: that by the time it is published, Latour's empiricism may well have proven the most prudent approach to the crises. The radical instability of the situation makes ethical demands upon us: to collect evidence, to pay attention, and to prepare for change. Latour makes compelling claims for the political implications of careful description. This is a position that can be described as "skeptical activism", in contrast to the destructive pseudo-skepticism of entrenched interests. Show more
