History of the Hydraulic Institute, Pisa University

Abstract

The Hydraulic Institute of Pisa University counts among the leading institutions in Italy. This work intends to highlight the laboratory facilities on the one hand, and its leaders from the early 20th century until today on the other. Despite the partially short stays of Institute Directors in the 1930s and 1940s, they were able to furnish outstanding research along with applied scale modeling for the city, the province and the state authorities. This paper also intends to stimulate others presenting similar papers relating to their Institutes and their hydraulic Laboratories, thereby popularizing the successes and the knowledge of Italian hydraulic engineering.

L’Istituto di Idraulica dell’Università degli studi di Pisa ha una storia molto rappresentativa della ricerca su temi idraulici in Italia. Questo lavoro vuole evidenziare la storia del laboratorio e i personaggi di maggior spicco del ventesimo secolo. A scapito della breve permanenza dei Direttori dell’Istituto negli anni ’30 e ’40, essi sono stati in grado di effettuar ricerche su modello fisico di importanti opere idrauliche. Questo studio intende, inoltre, stimolare altri ricercatori a presentare simili lavori relativamente a laboratori di Idraulica di altre Università Italiane, facendo conoscere la storia dei grandi successi della ricerca Italiana nel campo dell’ingegneria idraulica.
