«Versuchen, auch das Undenkbare zu denken»: Interview mit Armeechef Thomas Süssli

Abstract

In this interview for the Bulletin 2020 (in German), Chief of the Armed Forces Thomas Süssli comments on the role of the armed forces in Switzerland's coronavirus crisis management during the first wave in the first half of 2020. He assesses its mobilization and cooperation with various partners and elaborates on how the cooperation and preparation for the next crisis can be improved. a pandemic however is only one of the scenarios in which the army has a role to play. Accordingly, Süssli talks about the current challenges for Switzerland's security strategy, the armed forces of the future, the cooperation of the Swiss Armed Forces with partners abroad and, to this end, also about the role of military peacebuilding.

Im Interview mit dem Bulletin 2020 äussert sich Armeechef Thomas Süssli zur Rolle der Armee im Corona-Krisenmanagement der Schweiz während der ersten Welle im ersten Halbjahr 2020. Er beurteilt ihre Mobilisierung und die Kooperation mit verschiedenen Partnern und wie die weitere Zusammenarbeit und die Vorbereitung auf eine nächste Krise verbessert werden können. Eine Pandemie ist aber nur eines der Szenarien, in der die Armee eine Rolle einnimmt. Entsprechend spricht Süssli über die aktuellen Herausforderungen für die Sicherheitsstrategie der Schweiz, die Armee der Zukunft, die Kooperation der Schweizer Armee mit Partnern im Ausland und dahingehend auch über die Rolle der militärischen Friedensförderung.
