Abstract
On the Logic of Reforming Capitalism
What are the features of reforms that could both change capitalism and avoid those reforms’ usual fate, namely failing? A logic of reforming capitalism provides an answer that is crucial for a realistic minded Left. In search of such a logic I discuss a range of reform proposals: a circular economy, limiting access to markets and free movement of capital, the idea of 100% money, an unconditional basic income, protecting workers as investors, and establishing the transnational status of workers and citizens as subjects in international law. Reforms must weaken “capital’s second strike capability” (Offe). They should function like seeds and jointly produce a drift. Reforms also have to be unambiguous, and must rely upon already existing mentalities. Show more
