Half of the global population lives in urban areas and this is forecast to increase to three quarters by 2050. Due to profligate use of energy and unsustainable management of resources, urban settlements are responsible for the majority of adverse anthropogenic environmental consequences, such as greenhouse gas emissions and raw material depletion. It is important that we better understand this urban metabolism, its consequences and ways in which it can be optimised to minimise these consequences. As the problems of urban metabolism are complex and intertwined, (computer) modelling is indispensable to address this complexity in a rigorous way and thus to provide a sound knowledge basis to tackle them. In this spirit we propose to develop a detailed spatially explicit model of the dynamic exchanges of energy and matter within a city due to transportation, the operation of buildings and the activities accommodated by them. More specifically this will involve the further development and subsequent integration of LESO-SUNtool and MATSIM. The successor of SUNtool, LESO-SUNtool is the most fully developed model available for the explicit simulation of building-related energy, water and waste flows in urban settlements. In complement to this, MATSIM is a detailed transport microsimulation model - simulating each individual vehicular transport journey, following from initial route optimisation runs for each agent-traveller, at fine temporal resolution. Combining these tools will produce a platform with which all key urban physical resource flows (energy and matter) can be simulated. Once integrated, calibrated and validated, this new simulation platform will be applied to the city of Zürich to produce specific new guidance (incl. regulations, planning decisions, subsidies, education programmes etc.) for its development during the next fifty years, with a view to achieving a 2000W/capita city.
