Presidential Election and EU Referendum

Abstract

This first issue of the MDAD covers the presidential elections and the referendum on enshrining Moldova’s EU aspirations in the constitution, which took place in October and November 2024. The contributions analyze turnout and trends in comparison to 2020 (deSisto & Pop-Eleches), in relation to public opinion on EU integration (Burmester) and in the face of oligarchic and Russian interference (Marandici). The final contribution (Mihailov) comments on the domestic reasons for holding the referendum. In addition, the issue contains statistics, a news timeline, and international reactions on the election and the referendum.

Diese erste Ausgabe des MDAD befasst sich mit den Präsidentschaftswahlen und dem Referendum über die Verankerung der EU-Bestrebungen Moldaus in der Verfassung, die im Oktober und November 2024 stattgefunden haben. Die Beiträge analysieren die Wahlbeteiligung und Trends im Vergleich zu 2020 (deSisto & Pop-Eleches), in Bezug auf die öffentliche Meinung zur EU-Integration (Burmester) und vor dem Hintergrund oligarchischer und russischer Einmischung (Marandici). Der letzte Beitrag (Mihailov) geht auf die innenpolitischen Gründe für die Durchführung des Referendums ein.
