Tailored Controls: Creating Personalized Tangible User Interfaces from Paper
(2019)Proceedings of the 2019 ACM International Conference on Interactive Surfaces and SpacesUser interfaces rarely adapt to the specific user preferences orthe task at hand. We present a method that allows to quickly and inexpensively create personalized interfaces from plain paper. Users can cut out shapes and assign control functions to these paper snippets via a simple configuration interface. After configuration, control takes place entirely through the manipulation of the paper shapes, providing the experience ofa tailored ...Conference Paper -

>150 GHz Hybrid-Plasmonic BaTiO3-On-SOI Modulator for CMOS Foundry Integration
(2021)Frontiers in Optics + Laser Science 2021A ferroelectric, metal-oxide-semiconductor (MOS) based, hybrid-plasmonic modulator is shown to feature bandwidths of >150 GHz and is tested with 32 Gbit/s NRZ. The device is relying on BaTiO3-on-SOI and potentially offers CMOS compatibility.Conference Paper -
On the vibration attenuation properties of metamaterial design using negative stiffness elements
(2022)NODYCON Conference Proceedings Series ~ Advances in Nonlinear DynamicsIn recent years, the promising concept of metamaterials has entered the field of civil engineering. These type of configurations are characterized by extraordinary properties regarding prevention or guidance of wave propagation. In order to increase the potential frequency band in which such structures efficiently attenuate vibration, the concept of nonlinearity is here exploited. Negative stiffness elements are studied and arranged in a ...Conference Paper -
Parametric Approach to Simplified Life Cycle Assessment of Bamboo Frame Buildings
(2021)The provision of sustainable housing solutions is one of the main challenges in emerging economy countries. Furthermore, it is clear that a sustainable solution should be based on renewable bio-based materials. The scientific and practical evidence clearly suggests that the use of bamboo in the provision of housing solutions not only brings environmental but also socio-economic benefits to the communities using these strategies. One barrier ...Conference Paper -
Plasmonic-MZM-based Short-Reach Transmission up to 10 km Supporting >304 GBd Polybinary or 432 Gbit/s PAM-8 Signaling
(2021)2021 European Conference on Optical Communication (ECOC)We employ an ultrabroad-bandwidth plasmonic Mach-Zehnder modulator to demonstrate 10-km IM/DD transmission at a symbol rate of 304-GBd (AIR 293.3-Gbit/s, net 270.0-Gbit/s) realized with a poly-binary modulation scheme, and a line rate of 432-Gbit/s (AIR 383.6-Gbit/s, net 350.4-Gbit/s) using PAM-8.Conference Paper -

Highly Efficient Grating Coupler for Silicon Nitride Photonics with Large Fabrication Tolerance
(2021)Integrated Photonics Research, Silicon and Nanophotonics : part of Advanced Photonics CongressWe demonstrate low-loss fiber-to-chip coupling via a-Si grating couplers on top of SiN waveguides for C-band TE light. The suggested simple scheme is fabrication tolerant and offers a path towards coupling efficiencies above -1 dB.Conference Paper -
Formica Forma: Explorations in Insect-Robot Collaboration for Emergent Design and Manufacturing
(2021)Distributed Proximities: Proceedings of the 40th Annual Conference of the Association for Computer Aided Desing in Architecture. Volume 1: Technical Papers, Keynote ConversationsHybrid robot systems that cooperate with live organisms is an active area of research, in part to leverage biological advantages such as adaptivity, resilience, and sustainability. Formica Forma explores new possibilities of codesigning and cofabricating in partnership with Western Harvester ants to build forms that would be challenging with industrial techniques. Using a robotically controlled UV light (350–405 nm) as an environmental ...Conference Paper -
Tableau: Future-Proof Zoning for OT Networks
(2021)Lecture Notes in Computer Science ~ Critical Information Infrastructures SecurityFor over two decades, hierarchical zoning models have dominated operational technology (OT) network design. However, ongoing changes to industrial network technologies and workloads, together with rising threat levels, are now challenging this design pattern. To address these issues, this paper introduces Tableau, a new zoning architecture for OT networks. Tableau increases network flexibility by flattening the zone structure and by ...Conference Paper
