Gaze and feet as additional input modalities for interacting with geospatial interfaces
(2016)ISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information SciencesGeographic Information Systems (GIS) are complex software environments and we often work with multiple tasks and multiple displays when we work with GIS. However, user input is still limited to mouse and keyboard in most workplace settings. In this project, we demonstrate how the use of gaze and feet as additional input modalities can overcome time-consuming and annoying mode switches between frequently performed tasks. In an iterative ...Conference Paper -
Dependence of Crater Formation in Dry EDM on Electrical Breakdown Mechanism
(2016)Procedia CIRP ~ 18th CIRP Conference on Electro Physical and Chemical Machining (ISEM XVIII)The research effort in dry electrical discharge machining (DEDM) has increased during the last years. The process has advantages in comparison with EDM in oil-based dielectric media, such as low tool electrode wear, thin recast layers on the work piece surface and much more environmentally friendly conditions. However, the plasma-material surface interactions involved in dry EDM are not properly explained yet. Therefore, a characterization ...Conference Paper -
Residual Resistance of Non-Mechanical Prestressed CFRP Anchorages Subjected to Environmental Conditions
(2016)7th International Conference on Advanced Composite Materials in Bridges and Structures (ACMBS-VII)Flexural strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) elements with prestressed Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) as an externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) has gained increasing popularity over the last years. Opposite to conventional mechanical anchorages, the gradient anchorage is a purely bond-based technique. It is achieved by utilizing the fast curing property of epoxy under high temperatures together with a segment-wise ...Conference Paper -
Discontinuous percolation
(2016)Journal of Physics: Conference SeriesI present recent progress in understanding abrupt connectivity transitions, i.e. percolation-type models exhibiting first order phase transitions. The introduction of bridge bonds and their tricritical scaling allows obtaining exact expressions for the appearance of a jump in the order parameter. Another exact result can be obtained through the Potts model using Gliozzi's scheme. Finally also hybrid transitions are discussed.Conference Paper -
On the optimal control problem for a class of monotone bilinear systems
(2016)Proceedings of the 22nd International Symposium on Mathematical Theory of Networks and SystemsWe consider a class of positive systems in which the control signal enters bilinearly with the state. Such dynamics arise naturally, for example, from modeling the evolutionary dynamics of HIV in the presence of drug therapy. For this class of system, we formulate an infinite horizon optimal control problem and show that the optimal control signal is constant over time. We further extend our results to the case of uncertain dynamics and ...Conference Paper -
Phase change dispersion, potentially a new class of heat transfer fluids
(2016)Journal of Physics: Conference SeriesThe authors present values and an application of a phase change dispersion, where the dispersed phase change material within water changes from solid to liquid while absorbing heat and changes from liquid to solid while releasing heat at constant temperature. The phase change enthalpy increases the "apparent specific heat capacity" significantly in comparison to water. As the heat transfer takes place at constant temperature, the heat ...Conference Paper -
Diamond sensors for future high energy experiments
(2016)Nuclear Instruments and Methods in Physics Research Section A: Accelerators, Spectrometers, Detectors and Associated Equipment ~ Proceedings of the 10th International “Hiroshima” Symposium on the Development and Application of Semiconductor Tracking DetectorsWith the planned upgrade of the LHC to High-Luminosity-LHC [1], the general purpose experiments ATLAS and CMS are planning to upgrade their innermost tracking layers with more radiation tolerant technologies. Chemical Vapor Deposition CVD diamond is one such technology. CVD diamond sensors are an established technology as beam condition monitors in the highest radiation areas of all LHC experiments. The RD42-collaboration at CERN is leading ...Conference Paper -
Derivation and analysis of the analytical velocity and vortex stretching expressions for an O(N log N)-FMM
(2016)Journal of Physics: Conference SeriesIn the current paper, a method for deriving the analytical expressions for the velocity and vortex stretching terms as a function of the spherical multipole expansion approximation of the vector potential is presented. These terms are essential in the context of 3D Lagrangian vortex particle methods combined with fast summation techniques. The convergence and computational efficiency of this approach is assessed in the framework of an O(N ...Conference Paper -

A new optimization procedure for the accurate characterization of thermal phase transformation curves based on controlled quenching experiments
(2016)MATEC Web of Conferences ~ The 12th International Conference on Numerical Methods in Industrial Forming ProcessesPrecise hardness and phase content prediction for quenched steel with the finite element method requires optimal material data, which is usually obtained from measured continuous cooling transformation (CCT) diagrams. However, most software packages that are able to predict final phase composition require time temperature transformation (TTT) diagrams. TTT diagrams can be calculated from the chemical composition of the material. With this ...Conference Paper
