Simultaneous Detection and Tracking of Pedestrian from Velodyne Laser Scanning Data
(2016)ISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information SciencesPedestrian traffic flow estimation is essential for public place design and construction planning. Traditional data collection by human investigation is tedious, inefficient and expensive. Panoramic laser scanners, e.g. Velodyne HDL-64E, which scan surroundings repetitively at a high frequency, have been increasingly used for 3D object tracking. In this paper, a simultaneous detection and tracking (SDAT) method is proposed for precise and ...Conference Paper -
Condition-based Maintenance: Model vs. Statistics A Performance Comparison
(2016)Procedia CIRP ~ Factories of the Future in the digital environment - Proceedings of the 49th CIRP Conference on Manufacturing SystemsThe current development in industrial applications shows a variety of approaches to perform maintenance: With reactive maintenance, only parts which fail will be replaced. This causes high costs and high unexpected failure rates. Preventive maintenance uses a predefined service plan and also a wear part exchange schedule. The plan or schedule is often based on real-time or an operation time. This often results in fixed maintenance cycles ...Conference Paper -
Virtual reality based time and motion study with support for real walking
(2016)Procedia CIRP ~ Factories of the Future in the digital environment - Proceedings of the 49th CIRP Conference on Manufacturing SystemsManual operations in mass production are important cost drivers. Thus, tools like the MTM (Methods-time Measurement) – a time and motion study method – were introduced, which are nowadays established in industry for evaluation and improvement of production facilities. In this method, cardboard engineering is used to build simplified physical mock-ups of machines or production lines, in which the manual working process can be simulated. ...Conference Paper -
Comparison of Ground and Laser Machined Wiper Geometry on Carbide Inserts for High Performance Finishing
(2016)Procedia CIRP ~ 7th HPC 2016 – CIRP Conference on High Performance CuttingCutting tool development is still driven by trial and error and therefore requires various prototypes and modifications. The normal manufacturing process for carbide cutting inserts includes die production, pressing, sintering, grinding and coating. A laser can provide an easy and economical way to make modifications and prototypes out of pressed inserts. The paper compares a normal pressed and ground insert with the same geometry using ...Conference Paper -
EDM Drilling and Shaping of Cooling Holes in Inconel 718 Turbine Blades
(2016)Procedia CIRP ~ 18th CIRP Conference on Electro Physical and Chemical Machining (ISEM XVIII)Machining capabilities of modern EDM drilling machines for drilling cooling holes and diffusers in turbine blades are described. For improving the process capability and machining efficiency of aerospace alloys, drilling of cooling holes and formation of diffusers can be combined into a single process by using the same electrode for both processes. Experimental results of material removal rate, relative tool wear and surface integrity for ...Conference Paper -
Iterative Learning for Machine Tools Using a Convex Optimisation Approach
(2016)Procedia CIRP ~ 7th HPC 2016 – CIRP Conference on High Performance CuttingDynamic, quasi-static and motion control deviations lead to nonlinear but systematic tracking errors. It is shown that these errors can be reduced significantly by adjusting the set points using an optimization based iterative learning approach. This method uses either values obtained from internal encoders or alternatively tool center point measurements. The approach is presented, discussed and validated using simulation and measurement results.Conference Paper -
Real walking in virtual environments for factory planning and evaluation
(2016)Procedia CIRP ~ 6th CIRP Conference on Assembly Technologies and Systems (CATS)Nowadays, buildings or production facilities are designed using specialized design software and building information modeling tools help to evaluate the resulting virtual mock-up. However, with current, primarily desktop based tools it is hard to evaluate human factors of such a design, for instance spatial constraints for workforces. This paper presents a new tool for factory planning and evaluation based on virtual reality that allows ...Conference Paper -
Success Story Cutting
(2016)Procedia CIRP ~ 7th HPC 2016 – CIRP Conference on High Performance CuttingCutting technologies are the engines behind manufacturing. Without cutting, none of our modern products would ever been put into service. Developing new materials directly needs research for process windows in cutting. Huge engineering efforts brought cutting in the position where it is today and despite all rumors trying to declare, that cutting is outdated or cutting research is finished it is still a vital field of research and prone ...Conference Paper -
Laser Touch Dressing of Electroplated CBN Grinding Tools
(2016)Procedia CIRP ~ 7th HPC 2016 – CIRP Conference on High Performance CuttingIn this paper, an alternative process for dressing electroplated cBN grinding wheels using an ultrashort pulsed laser is presented. Other than abrasive grains dressed conventionally, laser touch dressed cBN grains exhibit cutting edges that have partially defined geometric elements with a positive clearance angle. Grinding experiments, including long-term tests, are performed on hardened steel, for a comparative study on the performances ...Conference Paper -
Experimental Study of EDM-Drilling and Shaping of SiSiC and SiC
(2016)Procedia CIRP ~ 18th CIRP Conference on Electro Physical and Chemical Machining (ISEM XVIII)A growing interest in the machining of Silicon carbide (SiC) is caused by its excellent properties. This makes SiC and Siliconized Silicon carbide (SiSiC) suitable for a variety of applications, like cutting tools, electric systems, electric circuit elements, structural materials, etc. However, the material properties create difficulties in SiSiC processing. For this reason electrical discharge machining (EDM) was utilized to process it. ...Conference Paper
