Computationally Efficient Integration of Complex Thermal Multi-Chip Power Module Models into Circuit Simulators
(2007)2007 Power Conversion Conference ProceedingsFor analyzing reliability or short-term overload conditions of power electronic systems, it is necessary to know transient temperatures of the power semiconductors. Directly coupling thermal and circuit simulators increases the simulation time by orders of magnitude, therefore making such an approach impractical. A well-known solution to this problem is to extract thermal equivalent circuits from 3D-field simulations and to insert them ...Conference Paper -
A 100 kHz SiC Sparse Matrix Converter
(2007)2007 IEEE Power Electronics Specialists ConferenceA Sparse Matrix Converter (SMC) is a direct AC/AC converter that contains no large energy storage components. A 100 kHz, 1.5 kW SiC SMC is presented, which uses 1300 V, 4 A SiC JFET cascode devices. The SMC is operated from a 50 Hz, 230 V mains supply and has a predicted efficiency of 94%. A tower-like construction results in a volume of 1 liter and a power density of 1.5 kW/liter (25 W/in 3 ). The measured waveforms verify matrix operation ...Conference Paper -
Bi-Directional Isolated DC-DC Converter for Next-Generation Power Distribution - Comparison of Converters using Si and SiC Devices
(2007)2007 Power Conversion Conference ProceedingsIn this paper two bi-directional DC-DC converters for a 1MW next-generation BTB system of a distribution system, as it is applied in Japan, are presented and compared with respect to design, efficiency and power density. One DC-DC converter applies commercially available Si-devices and the other one high voltage SiC switch, which consists of a SiC JFET cascode (MOSFET+1 JFET) in series with five SiC JFETs. In the comparison also the high ...Conference Paper -
Combined radial-axial magnetic bearing for a 1 kW, 500,000 rpm permanent magnet machine
(2007)APEC 07 - Twenty-Second Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and ExpositionUltra-high-speed and high-power-density drives are attracting much interest in today's industry. For instance, there are several investigations into mesoscale gas turbine generator systems and turbocompressors for fuel cells. In all ultra-high-speed machinery the bearing is a key technology. Therefore, this paper focuses on the design of a 500,000 rpm active magnetic bearing suitable for use in a 1 kW PM machine to complete an ultra-high-speed ...Conference Paper -
A new 3-phase buck-boost unity power factor rectifier with two independently controlled DC outputs
(2007)APEC 07 - Twenty-Second Annual IEEE Applied Power Electronics Conference and ExpositionA new 3-phase buck-boost unity power factor rectifier consisting of a 3-phase bridge buck PFC rectifier and two boost dc-dc converters connected in series is proposed for an industrial application where two independent output voltages need to be controlled. This paper presents the proposed topology and the requirements for this application. The proposed and alternative topologies are briefly compared. Through this comparison, it is shown ...Conference Paper
