GRAPE
(2011)International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information SciencesA new audio-visual learning medium has been developed at the Department of Environmental Sciences at ETH Zurich (Switzerland), for use in geographical information sciences (GIS) courses. This new medium, presented in the form of RepetitionUnits, allows students to review and consolidate the most important learning concepts on an individual basis. The new material consists of: a) a short ...Conference Paper -
Watersheds and explosive percolation
(2011)Physics ProcediaThe recent work by Achlioptas, D'Souza, and Spencer opened up the possibility of obtaining a discontinuous (explosive) percolation transition by changing the stochastic rule of bond occupation. Despite the active research on this subject, several questions still remain open about the leading mechanism and the properties of the system. We review the largest cluster and the Gaussian models recently introduced. We show that, to obtain a ...Conference Paper -
Temperature Controlled Viscosity and Density Measurements on a Microchip with High Resolution and Low Cost
(2011)Procedia Engineering ~ Eurosensors XXVA chip-based viscosity and density sensor which requires a sample volume of less than 10 colonl is presented. A resistive heater and a temperature sensor are provided for accurate and fast temperature dependent measurements. An inductive readout of the resonance frequency and the damping further facilitates the measurement procedure. Thereby high resolution measurements of fluid properties are easily made in view of their analysis in the ...Conference Paper -
Coal characterization for ECBM recovery: Gas sorption under dry and humid conditions, and its effect on displacement dynamics
(2011)Energy Procedia ~ 10th International Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control TechnologiesEnhanced Coal Bed Methane (ECBM) recovery is a technique under investigation as a possible approach to the geological storage of CO2 in a carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS) system. This technology allows enhancing the recovery of coal bed methane by injecting CO2 in the coal seam at supercritical conditions. Through an in situ sorption/desorption process the displaced methane is produced and the adsorbed CO2 is permanently stored. ...Conference Paper -
Direct flue gas CO2 mineralization using activated serpentine: Exploring the reaction kinetics by experiments and population balance modelling
(2011)Energy Procedia ~ 10th International Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control TechnologiesAvoiding CO2 emissions to the atmosphere by its safe and permanent storage is required for all options within the CCS framework. Only mineral carbonation allows for a sequestration process, where the carbon is rapidly converted to its chemically most stable form, a carbonate. So far, most researchers looking into mineral carbonation focused on routes that involve an aqueous medium, where carbonation takes place under an atmosphere of pure ...Conference Paper -
Use of Image and Laser Scanning Data for Building Detection
(2011)International Archives of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences ~ Geospatial Data and Geovisualization: Environment, Security, and SocietyIn this work, we focus on the mainly detection of buildings.. As input data, we use LIDAR data and multispectral aerial images of two different test sites. One is from Zurich airport and the other one is from Vaihingen region close to Stuttgart. Quality assessment has been performed by comparing our results with existing reference data which are generated using commercial photogrammetric software and manual stereo measurement.Conference Paper -
Characterization of RF Resonators Made of Biodegradable Materials for Biosensing Applications
(2011)Procedia Engineering ~ Eurosensors XXVIn this paper we present the characterization by galvanic coupling (direct contact) of radio-frequency (RF) driven RLC resonators made of different biodegradable materials, including biodegradable metals and new biodegradable conducting polymers. An equivalent electrical circuit is proposed based on the RLC resonator geometry and material properties. The Matlab modeling and the finite elements HFSS simulations are in good agreement with ...Conference Paper -
Bandwidth Compensation for High Resolution Impedance Spectroscopy
(2011)Procedia Engineering ~ Eurosensors XXVThis paper reports on a microfluidic differential impedance cytometer, which uses a bandwidth compensation technique together with a small detection volume and multi-frequency analysis to achieve an increased sensitivity. The bandwidth compensation technique allows for measurements within small bandwidths by accounting for the increased signal amplitude dependence on the particle speed. We demonstrate detection and clear baseline ...Conference Paper -
Developments in the pre-combustion CO2 capture pilot plant at the Buggenum IGCC
(2011)Energy Procedia ~ 10th International Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control TechnologiesN.V. Nuon (part of the Vattenfall Group) operates an IGCC in Buggenum and is developing a multi-fuel IGCC with CO2 capture and storage (Nuon Magnum) in Eemshaven, the Netherlands. In order to prepare for large-scale application of CO2 capture and storage, a CO2 capture pilot plant is constructed at the Buggenum IGCC plant and will be ready for testing in January 2010. The overall objective of the CO2 Catch-up project is to demonstrate ...Conference Paper -
Antecedents of risk and benefit perception of CCS
(2011)Energy Procedia ~ 10th International Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control TechnologiesPublic perception may have a strong impact on the progress of Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage (CCS). Benefit perception and risk perception are known to be important determinants of public acceptance of CCS. In our study, we examined antecedents of risk and benefit perception of CCS by means of a representative survey and an experimental survey. Our results suggest that a variety of intuitive concepts about CCS influence risk perception ...Conference Paper
