Recurrent Highway Networks
(2017)Proceedings of Machine Learning Research ~ Proceedings of the 34 th International Conference on Machine LearningMany sequential processing tasks require complex nonlinear transition functions from one step to the next. However, recurrent neural networks with “deep” transition functions remain difficult to train, even when using Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks. We introduce a novel theoretical analysis of recurrent networks based on Gersgorin’s circle theorem that illuminates several modeling and optimization issues and improves our understanding ...Conference Paper -
Modeling Ground Surface Uplift During CO 2 Sequestration: The Case of in Salah, Algeria
(2017)Energy Procedia ~ 13th International Conference on Greenhouse Gas Control Technologies, GHGT-13In this work we carried out numerical simulations of coupled fluid flow and geomechanics aimed at understanding the effect of deep fracture zone opening during CO2 geological sequestration. Here we present a more detailed analysis of the modeled ground uplift at the three different injection wells of the In Salah CO2 demonstration project. The numerical modeling accounts for stress-dependent permeability within the reservoir unit and deep ...Conference Paper -
Deep Feature Learning Network for Fault Detection and Isolation
(2017)Annual Conference of the PHM Society ~ Proceedings of the Annual Conference of the PHM Society 2017Prognostics and Health Management (PHM) approaches typically involve several signal processing and feature engineering steps. The state of the art on feature engineering, comprising feature extraction and feature dimensionality reduction, often only provides specific solutions for specific problems, but rarely supports transferability or generalization: it often requires expert knowledge and extensive intervention. In this paper, we propose ...Conference Paper -
Controlled three-dimensional rotation of single cells using acoustic waves
(2017)Procedia CIRP ~ 3rd CIRP Conference on BioManufacturingThe ability to precisely control the three-dimensional orientation of micrometer-sized biological samples is critical for its phenotypic investigation. We develop an acoustic wave-based microfluidic device that can be used for the trapping and rotational manipulation of single plant cells. Resonant acoustic excitation of air-filled microbubbles generates localized vortices that can be used for the controlled three-dimensional rotation of ...Conference Paper -
Assembly-aware design of masonry shell structures: a computational approach
(2017)Proceedings of IASS Annual Symposia ~ Interfaces: Architecture, Engineering, Science, Annual Meeting of the International Association of Shell & Spatial Structures (IASS),This paper proposes a workflow for Assembly-Aware Design (AAD) of masonry shell structures and introduces an interactive tool in a CAD environment to assist the design process while simulating the step-by-step assembly of masonry blocks. Thus designers can explore the design space of masonry shell structures and be aware of structural performance before the assembly phase, at the early design stage. Masonry shell structures are an old ...Conference Paper -

Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET): Clues on how to interpret written feedback
(2017)Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Higher Education AdvancesIn this paper we present the results of a study covering 218 written comments submitted in the formal university SET questionnaire of two undergraduate physics lectures for engineering students. Concerning the SET-metrics, one of the lectures was rated as critical, while the other lecture had good results. The analysis is based on the praise and criticism framework elaborated by Hyland/Hyland (2001) for written feedback. Our findings, ...Conference Paper -
Linear and nonlinear elastic properties of dense granular packings: A DEM exploration
(2017)EPJ Web of ConferencesDiscrete Element Method modeling is used to study the frequency spectrum of particle motion in dense 3D packings of glass beads with Hertz-Mindlin contacts. Frequency sweeps show a dependency of the resonant frequencies on the drive amplitude and confining stress on the system, showing material changes in the system. The amplitude dependency of the second thickness mode 3λ/4 as identified by the internal strain field scales as f ∝ σ1/6 ...Conference Paper
