“National income estimates date back to the latter seventeenth century. But it has been only in the past half century or so since World War II that economic accounts have developed in their present form, becoming an indispensable tool for macroeconomic analysis, projections, and policy formulation” (Kendrick 1996:1). This article reviews the historical stages of national income accounting that paved the way to the latest version of the United Nations’ System of National Accounts (SNA 1993), which is currently used by statistical offices throughout the world.
