The discrete choice modeling framework plays a dominant role in travel demand modeling. It is particularly suitable for choices with a compact choice set, such as mode choices. However, for spatial choices such as route or destination choices, which are in general characterized by a large number of alternatives, the choice set formation step poses crucial and to date unsolved methodological and empirical problems.
