Abstract

The knowledge of traffic flows between defined origins and destinations in a road network represents the predominant form of information required by planners and engineers for effective traffic management and control. This information is obtainable through an indirect method of origin-destination (O-D) matrix estimation based on infrastructure-based sensors capable of measuring vehicle flows. Regardless of the method used, an O-D matrix is sought that yields link flows that are as “close” as possible to the measured link flows. The generated OD matrix is then assigned to produce path flows and travel times. This paper presents a single-stage approach to the simultaneous estimation of a static O-D matrix, path flows and path ravel times, referred to as the Path Flow Estimator (PFE). The PFE employs either the Multinomial logit (MNL), C- or Path Size (PS) logit route choice models. A hypothetical network is used to illustrate the properties of the PFE for different specifications of the logit model. Its capability and efficiency are illustrated taking a road network for the whole of Switzerland.
